Nor will you feel like getting rid of the algae in your pool was either luck, or divine intervention... not to mention, you will rarely, if ever, have algae in your pool if you are following TFPC methods.

It's not that the "Pool Chem Industry" is inherently evil, Bri.
But Pool stores (which you would expect to know something about the chemicals they sell) are almost all uneducated and ill-informed.
Combine that with the seasonal employees (typically teenagers, or college students) that are given only minimal training. {In truth, a few hours of reading in Pool School, and you'll have more thorough understanding of pool chemistry than most pool store employees.
}Not to mention most of them are using ineffective testing "tools"-- some have good testing but aren't using it properly.
Pool stores are businesses-- they exist to turn a profit, plain and simple... But there are some things that are only available at pool stores, whether local or online. (Parts for pool equipment... higher concentration Liquid Chlorine, ~12%... CYA... Polyquat-60 algecide... etc.) So they do serve a purpose.
But like anything else, as a consumer, it is in your own best interest to be informed. Then you'll be able to go into the pool store of your choice, and buy what you need, when you need it -- be it "pool chems", or whatever.... and not rely on someone else to know your needs. ?
