Filter or chemical problem

Hi,
Using http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html, your slam level is 28. By plugging your current test results into the poolcalculator it shows you need to add 3 gallons of 8% plain, unscented bleach to bring the FC to the correct level. Your would need to check the FC every 1 to 2 hours the first day and keep bringing the pool to slam level as often as possible until night. You can keep the CYA at 70 and slam at that level, or you can drain and refill approximately 25% of the volume of the pool for a slam level of 16.

Quick question, do you use well water for your pool?

I am quite happy with most of your numbers! I was worried a couple of them would be way higher! Lets get started.

PH-if your FC is over 10 your PH test will not be correct. Let your FC drift down to 9 and redo the PH test.

TA-we will work on that after we know for sure what your PH is

CH-does not matter with a vinyl pool

CYA=70 That is a little high for a non-salt pool. The higher the CYA the higher your FC needs to be. The only real way to lower CYA is to drain some of the pool.

Here is a link to pool math.

Play around with it. Punch in your numbers and see how much water it says to remove from you pool. Post your results here so we can double check it.

Did you have fun doing the tests?

Well, CC=1 and cloudy blue tells me you need to read the directions on SLAMing your pool in the How To section of Pool School and follow that procedure completely to the end.

* CC is 0.5 or lower;
* You pass an OCLT (ie overnight FC loss test shows a loss of 1.0 ppm or less);
* The water is clear.

When all three are true, you are done SLAMing and can allow the FC to drift down to normal levels.

It would be best to do a partial drain now to lower the CYA as the pool will be easier to SLAM and easier to take care of after the SLAM. If you had some type of fill water problems then that would be another issue, but for now I say replace 25% of the water as that is the way to remove the excess CYA.

Okay, help me understand, tim5055. In slam my cya HAS to be below to get cc of .5 and to do that I HAVE to drain 25% of the pool. Or, as sketch and Steve-in-VA said, there are options.

According to pool school, if my CYA is 70 my FC needs to be 28, if that is true, can I just continue to add chlorine until my FC is 28 and the pool begins to clear?

Leaving it is an option but it is not recommended. Too increase your FC to 28 from 13.5 you will need 395oz of 8.25% (3gallons) that's just the first dose. If it constantly drops to that level 2-3 times a day that's 9 gallons a day... Say 3 -5 days...x $3 a gallon.. ...

Then you have maintaining a level of 8fc throughout the course of the season. ...

Its potentially cheaper in the long run to drain 25%....

Or vacuum to waste the gunk at the bottom then refill. Retest CYA and it could drop to 60. Then as the season progresses with back washing you can continue to replace the water.

In general you would like your pool to have a CAY of 30-50 (assuming no SWG). While I am also new to this TFPC concept, I read so many forum posts, and to me there is one theme that is so common. New people come to the forum with water issues. They say my pool has been fine for a while, but now it isn't. And almost always the CYA is way to high, but their habits in how much FC they add hasnt changed along with the CYA increase, and at some point it gets out of balance, and the pool turns bad.

I understand your apprehension about draining your pool. It seems wasteful. But the water you let out isnt going to waste, it is going to get back into the water system somehow, either by you draining into a sewar, or into a creek that flows to a river at some point.

You can absolutely treat your pool without draining it, you will just use more chlorine both now and long term as well. Or you can drain some water now, pay for that water, and use less chlorine now and less chlorine in the long term. Your choice. Here is an analogy. If you wanted to paint your house, people might say put down drop cloths to make sure you dont get paint on the floors and furniture. Of course, you can paint without the drop cloths, it is just more of a pain. Same thing here with the water replacement and CYA.

Since your pool is dirty, here is what you should do. Vacuum your pool thoroughly, with the pump set to waste. This will drain a lot of water out of the pool. Do a thorough backwsh of yoru filter, and that will drain a lot of water as well. After those two things, you will be close to losing as much water as you needed to in the first place.

Water is relatively cheap to replace, so it is not a big deal.
