I'm not sure what I paid for it since I bought it through my wholesale dealer several years ago. That price sounds pretty high. I would check online and other stores first

eBay and Amazon have them for quite a bit less.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

There's also Filter Flosser, but it's a lot more expensive and we've only had this positive review and this one that sounds too much like an ad so might have been spam. Personally, I use a hose attachment with multiple settings that I put on "jet" and it works well, but it does take time since there are so many Dang pleats (especially since I have 4 cartridges to clean -- fortunately only once per year).

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I put the brass nossle, the Filter Flosser, and the AquaComb to the test to clean my 4 Hayward cartidges early on the Fourth of July.

The Filter Flosser wasn't worth the effort. It shoots some nice streams, but the added feature of the combs in the AquaComb make my overall winner.

The AquaComb is better than the brass nossle because it's a more effecient and cleans a larger area saving both water and time. Of course the brass nossle delivers a nice hard blast of water, but it has a limited area and takes more time.

The fingers (comb) on the AquaComb make it much easier to get deep into the filter. If you need a little extra blast of power in a smaller area, you can turn the AquaComb sideways and deliver more water vertically. This came in handy a couple of times and worked really well for a final once over.

Overall the brass nossle does a very good job for the price, but you'll probably spend a bit more in water (for some areas this is an issue). For me, I really liked the AquaComb and its now my tool of choice for cleaning the filters. It was faster, easier and used less water.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

Thank you all....I bought my house a year and a half ago and knew that the filter cartridge (and everything else) hadn't been changed in awhile. Turns out it hadn't been cleaned either...and my first attempts to open up the assembly failed. I gave up for awhile (life intervened with family health issues), but went out this past weekend determined to get it done.

Opening the assembly was a bit of a challenge, but we got it done....lifted out the filter cartridge and ugh!!! ....dark and slimy. Not a pretty sight.

We got out the high pressure nozzle and got to work hosing it off. It took some doing, but the cartridge went back into the assembly clean and white again. After a couple days of running, the pool is now sparkly and crystal clear....the jets are pumping more water...and the pump is running much quieter.

Thank you for saving me a lot of money! I was just about ready to call the pool store and have them send a guy out with a new filter...and my plan was to watch what he did so I could do it myself next time.

Ha! I'll just bring out the high pressure nozzle and clean that baby up!

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I've used the Filter Flosser a few times and was happy with it relative to the brass nozzle approach. I was not aware of the aqua comb or else I might have considered that. It cut down the cleaning time for my filters significantly (probably about 1/2). Considering that I need to wash my filters 3 or 4 times after I open the pool, that is important to me.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I tend to agree with a lot of folks here about that brass nozzle - it's cheap, it's a simple 'tool' and with patience does a good job. For something more 'upmarket' that would help cut cleaning time down and possibly lead to less water being used yet still get the job done, I'm leaning on getting an Aqua Comb myself. I looked at the website and was quite impressed with the presentation. Just my $0.02

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I bought an Aqua Comb in preparation for cleaning my filter for the first time (still haven't done it yet). Do any of you have any thought that the comb will/could damage the filter -- like poke through? I've literally never seen my cartridge yet, and have in the past only used Intex cartridges, so I'm just checking to see if you guys who have used the Aqua Comb really do it as quickly and "recklessly" as on the video. Thanks for any input.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I've had my aqua comb for a few months and I highly recommend it. I use the aqua comb as shown on the video and it performs as shown on the video. I have a 4 cartridge filter so I have put it through it's paces. I have dropped it on paver's and been fairly aggressive and it still looks like new. Its cut down my cartridge cleaning time and does a great job getting in between the pleats and I have not poked through the pleats; you'll be glad you got one!

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

Thanks for the good information in this thread. For cleaning solutions to clean my spa filters I have so far only used the commercial filter cleaner products which seem to work well but are too expensive. I was planning to buy TSP but in my area was only able to find some Sunnyside Phospate Free TSP substitute. I bought a 4 pound bag of it but haven't opened it yet because I may return it. I am wondering if this would work as well as the regular TSP or if I should just use dishwasher detergent (haven't tried that yet, I still have a bottle of filter cleaner product). Does anyone have any experience with this "substitute?" The MSDS for the product only shows it as containing Sodium Sesquicarbonate.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

You need the real thing: trisodium phosphate (TSP). The substitutes will not work very well when it comes to cartridge cleaning. If you don't want to use a commercial filter cleaner and can't find real TSP, then use a dishwasher detergent.
