What is happening with the pH and TA?

Just did a test 30 mins after adding 2 gals at 1:53pm:

FC 1
CC 13.5
pH 7.2
TA 150

Here is a picture of the pH and an ammonia test that caps at 8ppm.

Should I add more than 2 gals of chlorine at a time? Is it concerning that my FC hasn’t got above 1 after adding 7 gals so far in 2 hours?

Add enough to get from current FC to 10, test 30 minutes later. When your pool holds 5-10FC after 30 minutes, then switch to SLAM.

"CC" is actually "Combined Chloramines."

Combined Chlorine is an acceptable term for CC.

Chlorine is combined with some atom or molecule to produce combined chlorine.

I suspect that the ammonia is quite high.

You can choose to continue to SLAM or maybe do a partial drain and refill.

Hard to tell exactly how much total chlorine it will take.

Maybe 10 gallons and maybe 100 gallons.

Have you ever used a product like Jack's #2 Copper and scale stuff?

Last year was the first year with this pool and we did not last year. I’m not sure about the prior owners however. Last year we used a local pool company to maintain the chemicals (they only used pucks in our chlorinator). I mentioned before but the last report we got from them before they close the “stabilizer” level listed was at 170 in September. I only ever saw them using test strips to test the water so who knows how accurate their readings were.

I don’t plan on going back to that store or using them for closing/opening again.

The prior owners of the pool maintained the pool themselves.

I think we broke through the ammonia finally. Here’s what it took:

5/11 11am 2lbs of cal hypo 1FC
5/12 3pm 3lbs of cal hypo 1FC
5/12 5pm 3lbs of cal hypo 1FC
5/12 7pm 3lbs of cal hypo 1FC
5/12 10pm 13lbs of cal hypo (I know not great but my calcium was low still)

In the morning FC was at 1. Felt defeated.

Then started reading more on TFP and asked for help and started using liquid chlorine 12.5%:

Today:
1pm - 2 gal 1FC
115pm - 2 gal 1FC
150pm - 2 gal 1FC
235pm - 3 gal 1FC
330pm - 3 gal 1FC
4pm - 3.5 gal finally hit 4.5 FC after this.
430pm - 2 gal 9FC and 1CC!
5pm - 2 cups!


Will continue with a SLAM until OCLT.

Okay last night at 10pm the FC was at 11.5 and CC at 1.

This morning at 9am the FC was at 4.5 and CC at .5.

I filled the cya tube all the way to the top and that’s the only way the black dot disappeared so I’m guessing I’m around 20 or less than that.

Is it safe to add chems to increase cya to 30 now or should I wait?

Go to this link and print out the instructions. Having a hard copy helps. Link-->SLAM Process
Add 20ppm of CYA, use the sock method.
Once the CYA is in the pool, start the slam. Target is 12.
After 30 minutes, start squeezing the sock.
