Another post about dispensing muriatic acid

Been running my pool for 10 years off the advice of this forum and it's been great. My pool with nearly 30 year old plaster has always demanded heavy acid. I added an SWG last year and that only increased. Opening this year led me to 3 days of MA additions to finally bring the PH and TA in level. I hate adding acid - the risk, the time, the pain of squatting and trying to maintain a pencil stream in front of the return. I've looked into an automated dispenser but my equipment is surrounded by fence and tons of mature landscaping so I fear the fumes would corrode the screws in the fence and kill all the established plants.

I can't quite get AI to render this constantly or logically but would an idea like this two piece solid molded funnel system work? I envision leaving the base out or storing it all in my shed, dropping in the funnel - adding the 2-4 cups of MA and having it slowly pour perfectly in front of the return at say a rate of quarter cup per minute. I'd pop the funnel out when done, rinse it in the pool and store it. I think a single molded piece is critical so there are no rubber gaskets anywhere for the acid to erode. The images are all a bit off - with the first one awkwardly levitating and the second showing acid below the spout level but hopefully you fellow pool junkies get the point.

So am I onto something? I need you smarter people to weight in and I'm willing to give up my million dollar idea for the greater good of progress and to expose myself to ridicule if this is so off base. I do see challenges in shipping with the spout attached to the funnel but I'd pay $50 for this piece of plastic in a heartbeat if it allowed me to add acid 2-3 x week without getting on my knees and sitting there for 10 minutes each time.

Have at it!

What’s your TA at? If you let it get down to 50/60ppm the acid additions will really slow down. I only had to add some once or twice last year. Haven’t need to add any yet this year. And I had new plaster last year.

But leaving a container of acid on the edge of the pool just seems to be inviting a problem. I just pour it in front of a return and try not to “glug” it, then brush.

TA is at 60 and kept it there most of last year. Added borates too last year. Overall, everything is good but I’m always optimizing.

I would never leave it unattended but while it’s dispensing, I’d do my other pool chores and start brushing.
It’s odd to need that much acid. What are you trying to keep the pH at? If you keep it 7.8ish it really shouldn’t need that much acid.

Someone else rigged up a gallon plastic jug and tubing to do something similar but I just never understood the need as it sounded like more hassle. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, But I never take more than 60 seconds adding acid.

I drop it to 7.5 often and get 3-4 days before it creeps closer to 8. No idea why it pushes Ph so much - gets a lot of use from kids and dogs but it’s really the geek in me plus a bad back that drives interest in this vs not knowing how to manage my pool. Skimming isn’t hard either but the solar skimmer is still something my geeky self likes and bought. I have a pond out there two so I have a lot of water maintenance to do regularly and frankly I just enjoy McGuyver like projects.

That’s probably why. If you let it get to 7.8-8.0 it’ll probably just sit there for a long time. There’s no need to keep it at 7.5.

Conceptually, you have pick up on some good features - a 1-piece funnel, a stand that will not tip over. Think about the width of the funnel such that the MA does not drip when pouring from the bottle into the funnel. You do not want MA drips on the coping.

Personally, I just pour in the 8-16 oz I normally add and walk away. Less than 60 secs. I have not had any issues. Therefore I would not use a device such you describe. As with your device and anytime pouring MA, ensure you are upwind of the fumes.

No for real. If the bending over for a long slow pour is the problem i would build something to pour waist high. I'd probably use 3/4 PVC with some reducers (expanders?) on one end for a redneck funnel.

Maybe. But something about trying to pour from a gallon jug of acid into a funnel even from waist high leaves lots of opportunities for splashes and spills onto the decking, or clothing. I can barely pour chlorine in the water without finding a white bleached dot on my nice pants sometimes.

What if a mosquito lands on your arm while pouring? Do you swat it with the left or the right hand? 🤔
