New install of jandy TCX won't turn on out the box

Maybe the electrician connected 240 volts while the selector switch was set to 115 volts?

Once the MOV blew out they realized their mistake and switched the selector switch.

That's not really a warranty item, but Jandy might work with you and send you a new unit.

Maybe you can replace the MOV if you can find the correct one.

Note the bubbling and burn marks on the circuit board from the voltage that melted MOV1.

Something zapped that board hard.

And those wear marks on that strap are interesting and not normal.

This looks like a used board to me.

That board has bubbling and burn marks.

If he examines the other side of the board, I would not be surprised if some circuit traces were vaporized.

The manufacturer is Epcos.

K115 looks like 115 volts.

2429 looks like a date code.

I will bet you MOV1 was a K230. MOV1 is used when 230V is selected, and MOV3 is used when 115V is selected.

MOV1 blew since the switch was set to 230V.

Possibly both are K115 and the selector puts them in series for 240 volts or in parallel for 120 volts.

In any case, something happened to damage the board.

Most likely application of 240 volts when the selector switch was set to 115 volts.

Ceramic transient voltage suppressors (CTVS) are voltage-dependent resistors with a symmetrical V/I characteristic curve whose resistance decreases with increasing voltage.

Because of their application as overvoltage protection devices, they are also often referred to as TVS (transient voltage suppressors) on silicon basis.

Connected in parallel with the electronic device or circuit that is to be guarded, CTVS form a low resistance shunt when voltage increases above a CTVS type-specific threshold value and thus prevent any further rise in the transient overvoltage.

I suspect that each MOV is in parallel with the two windings of the transformer input.

The switch changes the windings from series for 240 to parallel for 240 volts.

If the voltage is too high, the MOV shunts the excess to ground.

Since the voltage spike is not transient, the high continuous current causes the MOV(s) to blow out.

MOVs are designed for only brief spikes and not continuous overvoltage.

Most likely, both MOVs were exposed to 240 volts.

No I trust this electrician. He's installed plenty of other pool related stuff for me. Not saying he couldn't make a mistake, but he would have came clean and told me the truth if he fried it tll. There was some other issues with this item out the box when I got it. Faceplates broken. Air temp sensor wire was nicked all the way through. The pib control board plate was bent so it couldn't fit inside the panel, it needed to be altered to fit inside three wall mount. So id say it was damaged before it arrived to me

And now we get the rest of the story.

Who are you buying from?

If you are in the business, you should have an account with SCP/PoolCorp/Superior/Pool360.
