Hi friends. I have a Hayward tristar 950 VS pump installed in 2021. Apologies the title says 5 years but it 4. It’s been great, however in January start to make a grinding noise. Friend of mine owns a pool maintenance company he comes out and says I need either a new pump or a rebuild. I pay for a rebuild. I ask if it’s normal after only 4 years to need this and he’s just not a fan of Hayward products so he’s biased.

Fast forward to now i noticed a small leak unsure how long it’s been there…replaced all the seals, leak is gone and the noise is back. Like the bearings are screwed again.

Questions: anyone had something similar happen? Any advice you can offer?

Can I replace with a pentair If my SWG is Hayward?

Could there be anything I’m doing or not doing that causing pump issues?

Has anyone had a pump “fail” at 4 years?

Bad seals, the leak you are seeing, generally results in failed bearings, the noise you are hearing, after some time. You need to keep an eye out for the seal failure before it gets too bad.

Also, what was the seal# that you used when the pump motor was rebuilt? Seals come in different designs/quality:

You know I’m not sure I had my pool guy do that. Should I ask him?

If he has used poor quality seals, the lifespan may not be as good. I would ask what seal # he used? However, given the timespan, he may not remember.

Seals fail. Some sooner than others, unfortunately. Water chemistry can cause seals to fail as well, especially if the pH isn't kept proper. It can happen to any pump and motor combination. It usually take quite a while for a leaking seal to damage bearings, so watching for leaks is important to catch them early.
If you don't have Hayward automation you can put any brand pump in your system, the SWG won't care.

So I had another company come out and same thing…pump has failed. I truly don’t understand how only after 4 years. At all.

So I’m hesitant to go with Hayward again. When you say automation what do you mean?

An automation system would have you control everything in on place via a programmable system but I just checked your pictures in you media file and I see you control the pool via a time clock in your circuit breaker box. Basically now that we know you don't ha e automation you can use any pump you choose and you're not forced into one brand.
