Good news is that I was able to rid the pool (for now?) of the dreaded black algae. My SWG went kaput while I was not around, Cl went to zero and even before the pool could turn green the Black stuff got a foothold. Nothing that elevate d chlorine level and a wire brush couldn't remedy (eventually, but that is a whole different story). With all that, we have had torrential downpours for days and many pool level lowerings. During that the salt level took a dive and there was no generation from the SWG due to low salt. In a mild panic (to not repeat the black algae episode) and having no pool salt on hand, I resorted to using water softener salt. The pellets that went in to the skimmer seemed to do fine, the ones that were dumped into the pool proper did not. They have left stains where they settled. Looks to be iron stains perhaps. So much for "near food grade pellets. No lecture, it was stupid but panicky. I usually do very well in pool and chemical maintenance and am referred to often by neighbors as the "pool guru"...I have lost that title, lol.

So, what can I do to get rid of those stains? I have brushed with nylon brush and not much headway. Will they just fade with time, or do i have to scuba/snorkel and wire brush the stains? Thanks for any ideas. And as PSA, don't put water softener pellets in your pool.

Water softener salt is usually fine depending on what exact product you bought. You should brush it around until it is fully dissolve instead of letting it sit in one spot.
Thanks for reply...I thought that as well...pouring rain so just dumped...bad day all around...still, it obviously puts iron into the water...just regular Morton's pellets

Any time you are stressed for the right thing to do in a pinch you should keep liquid chlorine on hand to put in the pool. That will always buy you time to get the things you actually need and avoid errors.
