Getting combined chlorine levels down

My latest tests show a spread of around 0.5 pp between my FC and Total Chlorine. Water doesn't smell and looks good.

In the past, I've used Non-Chlorinated Shock Treatment (like this one Oxy Non-Chlorinated Shock Treatment 500 g) to get rid of CC and bring FC and TC levels back inline. The data sheet says it contains
- oxone monopersulphate
- potassium hydrogen sulphate
- sodium carbonate
- potassium persulphate
- dipotassium disulphate

I know TFP usually recommends SLAMing the pool to get rid of CC, but is there a significant drawback to using those shock products? I don't currently have the test kit to keep track of very high FC levels and the process is a bit involving for the time I have on hand this week.

Also, can CC levels go back from 0.5 to a proper level just with good sunlight?

CC of 0.5 is no issue and CC is reduced by UV. It's just evidence that your FC is doing something; could be simply bather load, or organics.

Those products listed will only increase your CC. If you don't have a means of testing; how do you know your CC?

I have a test kit but it stops at about 5ppm of chlorine. I'll get a better one next season but we only still have 2-3 good weeks left.

The CC level is from two different pool / hardware store tests which were pretty consistent with each other.

My CC levels raised in the last 10 days but we had basically no sunlight and a ton of rain. So the sun didn't do much to help.

Got it - CC less than 1 is completely normal and nothing to worry about 👍

Notice most of those products have “sulphate” in them and those are not good for pool, specifically concrete decking and products and especially a SWCG if you have/plan to have one.
