I have a 20 000 liters pool (5.5k gallons) and the manufacturer installed a 1.5HP pump single speed with a SWG. I was told to leave them on 24/7.
Electricity is cheap in here in Quebec, but I have noticed a pump of 40-50kwh per day since the pool is open.

I do not know why I wasn't offered a variable speed pump (the manufacturer offers them as an upgrade but I was never presented the upgrade, and since I didn't know anything about pools I didn't ask for it).

The whole system is running nice, SWG set about 10-15% and the water is very clear (gets filtered a lot I guess because the system is running 24/7?)

Should I switch the pump to a variable one?

Should?

Many of us have one and run at low speed. 1500RPM on my pump is about 200W. At $.12/kWh, it costs me about $17.50/month.

You would have to compare the energy use of the current pump to the new pump usage, then determine the payback buying the new pump.

Thanks for the calculator, will go and do the maths.

Also, do you know if it is a direct replacement for VSP and single speed? (or do they need to redo the whole plumbing)

direct replacement for VSP and single speed
Yes. No need to redo plumbing. HOWEVER, the location of the inlet and outlet ports on the pump may be in a dimensionally different locations. You may need to redo the plumbing at the pump to adjust.

Many pump manuals provide the dimensions. You may be able to find a pump with the same dimensional locations of the ports. Maybe not.

Great! I'll look into it, thanks for the info. Might also keep the pump until it dies and then buy a variable speed when I need to change down the road.
