Liquid Chlorine
Seen/heard horror stories about in line chlorinators blowing up when people switch sanitizers. I think ill be fine but just wanna make sure. I have been using strictly liquid for past 2 years, active ingredient sodium hypo. Instead of paying the neighbor kid to dump chlorine in, I was thinking about throwing 2 or 3 pucks in my chlorinator when I go on vacation. Pucks would be the typical trichlor. I never removed chlorinator from system jic I needed one day. Do I need to worry about anything minus the 12 to 18 CYA jump? I'm good with that, on the low side anyways.

I already have to pay him to water the flowers but last year I came home after a week to barely a half used jug. Don't want to test my luck this year coming home to a green pool.

What was put into the chlorine feeder before? If Trichlor, no issue.

The issue is putting different types of chlorine in the feeder.

There are three types of dry chlorine:
Trichlor
Dichlor and
Cal-hypo.

If the chlorinator had trichlor and you put trichlor in again...OK
If had any one of the above in the feed and you introduce another type...no bueno.
Do not put liquid chlorine in the feeder....no bueno.

There is no issue, if you are using liquid chlorine by pouring it in the pool, to also have a chlorine feeder active.

Trichlor only (at least for me, pool was here when I bought the home) for 1st two years I lived here. Guessing previous owner used trichlor as well because the 20 or so pucks they left me were trichlor. I switched 2+ years ago to liquid which I pour directly into pool by return jet. Took me a while to get CYA down but I'm finally on the low side! I'm on a well so draining then refilling no bueno, don't want to guess what the cost is to repair a dried up well. I've never poured liquid into the feeder. In fact, the only time I've messed with feeder was last year when the cap was leaking.

Thank you for confirming what my hunch was. Glad I'm good to go.

If the feeder is plumbed directly to the pipes, I can't advise. But if it is off line (two small black hoses to the pipes) then make sure the black check valve in the bottom still works. Unscrew it and shake it - you should hear the ball inside rattle. Or you can try blowing into both ends, to make sure it really checks one way. They are notorious for gumming up, and then no Cl ever gets to the pool. No cleaning possible - buy a new on Amazon or elsewhere. I went through 3-4 a year, usually.
