Will testing all of these things mess up my chemistry terribly? I've avoided it in the past due to this concern. In addition, I have small black marks here and there and I have assumed they were dings in the fiberglass. That has made me wonder if I cannot really clean those small spots well, are they accumulating algae?Check your gauge- that it goes to zero when the pump is off. If it doesn’t it’s time to replace it.
If you get the chance (fc 10ppm or below) you can certainly adjust ph down.
Not sure how much that may have to do with the cloudiness as its likely the algae mostly to blame if you’re still having high overnight fc losses.
Keep at the
SLAM Process it does take time. Your shallow end looks quite promising!

The test for iron is vitamin c pills (in small amounts used to test this won’t affect fc)
The organic test is with a chlorine puck - more chlorine during a slam is no problem.
All nooks & crannies should be brushed during slam & on a regular basis. Maybe try a smaller brush
I have such better water clarity today. I am slowly adding the acid, the pH is down to 7.5 or a little less, TA is 110. This has paused my SLAM though and my FC is at 5.5. Once I get the TA down and assume the water is almost at crystal, I plan on checking all components for a SLAM to resume if needed. I was not passing the OCLT last I checked, but maybe the better balance will help this overall? Also, I try to keep my returns positioned down so I am not constantly aerating my pool and increasing pH, but they are very bubbly, to the point where I wonder if I have too much air in my system. Any thoughts? Or should I check a thread about equipment?

Do not pause slam to lower ta.
Bring ph to 7.2 & resume slam.
Ta (high or low) has no effect on algae or the slam.
The clouding from cal hypo takes time for the filter to clear.
The cloudiness from the algae will take slam level fc & filtering to clear.
Keep with the
SLAM Process testing fc & cc only until you’re passing all 3 end of slam criteria.
Ok, I think I am finally in the clear now that the water is properly balanced. I'm going to do the OCLT tonight to verify.

I passed the OCLT last night and I wanted to circle back to "how clear is clear". This is what I have this morning- I can distinctly make out this unfortunate rust spot at the base of my deep end (10x on my phone) and the years of discoloration and staining (my next project
) are apparent. If you can tell the type of staining from here, I'd appreciate it but I will also try the stain assessments shared.

Ok, I'll try the sock method, I grabbed some tablets. There's a lot of staining so if this is effective, I imagine I will have to go toward an AA treatment. Also, and reading more about this here, when we purchased the pool, there was a Nature 2 system. I hadn't used it in years until last year, thinking I was missing something since it came with the pool. I haven't replaced the cartridge this year, and all I can think is that the previous owners filled the pool from a water service whereas I am using our well water, impacting the metals more.

Well water is a common source for iron.
The aa treatment (which works for iron stains) is best suited for when the water is cold since fc needs to be low so late fall or early spring is best.
I like the idea of early spring since you’re not supposed to slam for 2 weeks after & i prefer to close at slam level.
