Just did my first water test!

Here were my results. Cya was tricky for me- I have good eyesight and while the black dot was hardly in view most of the time, I could still see it until the very end.

Cl=the darkest yellow, possibly above 5? Does this matter if I did the other chlorine tests?
pH=7.8
FCl=8
CCl=1
TCl=9
Hardness=350
Alk=100
CYa=35
Salt is 3300

If I performed the tests correctly, then I know my Cya is low and I think I need to add conditioner. Is this correct, and do any of the other numbers seem off? I have a feeling I'm going to need to look up how to do the SLAM process soon. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
How much chlorine is your SWCG creating each day?

Do not add CYA yet.

What is your SWCG? Brand, Model, etc. What % generation do you have it set on? How long do you run it each day? With that information, you use Effect of Adding Chemical in PoolMath to determine how much chlorine is being added to your pool each day.

I have a Jandy Fusion Salt Sanitizer, Handy Nature 2 Mineral Cartridge, and 2 Handy 2.7hp variable speed pumps. I'm not sure if that's what you are asking- I don't know a lot about this. It runs at 45% salt generation and at a minimum of 12 hours a day, more if it's a day we use it. I retested the chlorine again this morning, and it said 8.5 free chlorine, but this time 0 Ccls.

We recommend you remove the mineral cartridge. It will eventually stain your pool surfaces and turn blonde hair green. Adds copper, silver, etc.

I believe the Fusion Soft comes with the Aquapure 1400 cell.
At 45% run for 12 hours per day in a 15000 gallon pool it will add 2.2 ppm FC per day to the pool water.

Thank you, I will find the mineral cartridge and remove it, per your suggestion. I wrote down that the pool people wanted us to replace this every 6 months!
I just went outside and verified it's the 1400. Is adding 2.2 ppm FC per day a good thing? What should I do with this information? Should I be trying to get my CYA levels up now?

Our pools tend to consume anywhere between 2-4 ppm of FC each day in peak summer. That doesn't include a heavy bather load. 2.2 is a bit low IMO. I would either increase the SWG output % slightly or pump run time, which ever works better for you. It's a bit of experimenting until you find the "sweet spot" to where you get the FC to an ideal zone (say 6 for example) and then the SWG can keep it there.

I recommend adding a little bit or liquid chlorine now if you have some available. Get the FC up to 5 ppm right away to avoid excessive organics.

Below is a good visual. As long as your cell is maintaining that ideal FC level all is well. Never let it fall below the minimum.

I see that yesterday your FC was actually 8.5, so that's great! If it's still that high, you may not need to add liquid chlorine as I said above. Good idea to keep a jug handy for emergencies though. If the FC starts to exceed that ideal level, then you know you can dial-back the SWG output % or pump run time. I hope that all makes sense for you.

If my CYA levels are not in the desired range on the chart, should I go ahead and start working towards those levels (60-90)?
That is the ideal plan. Before doing so, I should ask ....... do you have ANY concerns about algae, hazy water, or cloudiness? The FC of 8.5, is that holding steady? We want to make sure there is no chance of excessive organics (algae) before increasing the CYA. If you have any doubts, do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test first. If you feel confident the FC is holding and of water clarity, then sure, increase the CYA to 70. Or you can increase it to 60 for now just to be safe. You can always add another 10 ppm later.

The water is very clear, no sign of any problems. The FC also seems to be holding, but I'll do one more overnight test before I change the CYA. Thank you!

With respect to removing the mineral cartridge, with a bit of luck you might still have the blank plug that came with the unit. If not however it is not hard to use a hack saw to remove the mineral beads from the cartridge, leaving the top bit in place to close the opening.

We still have the cap it came with, so removed the cartridge and put the cap on. Hopefully that will do the trick?
