Pre-Filters

We don't recommend prefilters.

Why don't you recommend them? Do they not pre-filter, or do they not reduce maintenance on the 'real' filter?

I was about to post this same question but searched and found this thread. I'm doing the same thing as islandtees except coming from a sand filter. I'm in the woods and get an amazing amount of debris in the pool. If this saves the cartridges in the DE filter I'm installing, I'd consider it.

For most pools it is not necessary.

You should have skimmer socks, skimmer baskets, and a pump basket all to catch debris before any prefilter or filter.

I doubt a prefilter will “save” your cartridges, whatever that means.

Most people think their pool is in some extreme environment when it is not.

I can't use skimmer socks--in the worst parts of the year they clog in a few hours. On a weekend when I can literally sit by the pool changing them while netting the surface, they're useful. When I can't, they aren't. The material is too fine for the skimmer baskets to catch.

"Save" means not putting holes in the cartridges, or at least having them last longer between backwashes. I'm less worried about this than I would be if the filter had grids and not cartridges, but if I can keep material out of the filter, so much the better.

I have no way of knowing where my pool environment is on an absolute scale, but I do know I spend more time than I have keeping it clean. If a prefilter can help in that process, I'll try it.

Do you have any actual experience with pre-filters--specifically the Cyclone the OP was asking about--or do you just dislike them on spec.?

My pool is fine without a prefilter.

Let us know how it works out for you.

We prefer you do not hijack a thread so this was spun off.

The pre filters do stop some crud from getting to the filter, but with a big enough filter (what we recommend instead) you can go all season between cleanings.

Which filter do you have? How big is the pool ? Please take a min and fill out your signature in your profile settings. It really helps us when you need help.

You won't damage the cartridges by cleaning them unless you get too close with a pressure washer.
