So I bought a house last year with an above ground pool, my first pool to maintain. It has a skimmer and a filter or drain "not exactly sure what to call it" cut in in the bottom center of the lining. Both the skimmer and this bottom drain currently run into a Hayward 4 way ball valve SP0735 then into the filter. it's cracked and slowly leaking. I plan on replacing before opening the pool. I was doing a little research and it seems that this valve is more used for backwash the filter. Anyone have recommendations for a valve to replace it with and then come winter time how do I empty this bottom drain without draining pool to prevent freezing

That is interesting. It comes down from the skimmer with an option to go into the ground - a WASTE line I'm assuming? The other end where the handle is has nothing connected. Is that where normally a hose go to the filter?

@Mdragger88 have you seen this type of valve before?

The union end goes to the filter, I have it disconnected because I'm rebuilding the base. The valve connects to the skimmer and the other end to a (return?) Not sure what it's called but pulls water from bottom of pull

I see now. So that end that goes down must be to a floor drain. So really that is nothing more than a 3-way valve of sorts, even though they say 4-way. When working properly, you should be able to adjust how much suction you wanted between the skimmer and the drain. Then it goes to the filter. So the challenge now is what to do now that the valve is bad. Just so you know, you have a couple options:
1- Find a suitable replacement valve to will mate-up to both suctions lines (skimmer & drain) and to a line going to the filter. I found THIS ONE on Amazon. Looks like the same one, but double check. Keep in mind that the shut-off valve to the filter is a different part. If that one is still good, you should be able to unscrew it and use it on the new valve. Or, you could get a new shut-off valve just to be safe and have everything like-new. I think THIS ONE might be the replacement.

2 - FYI, you could also plug the drain hose line and not use it. Then you would simply have one suction line from the skimmer going to the filter. Many, many pools do just fine with a skimmer only and no drain.

Hopefully that helps.

Its just a really expensive 3 way ball valve that has a sticker on it & what appears to be a union on one end. I guess they are counting “off” as one of the ways, hence the 4 way name although most others are just called 3 way valves.
A quick google shows them ranging from $50-$80.
Any ball valve with a union on 1 side & just a tee installed above or below (to reconnect your other valve going to the pump) will work the same for your application & can likely be had today for under $20.
I assume you would want to continue to be able to disconnect the union end to winterize your main drain & your skimmer.
