Going to try and get my RJ45+ installed over this long weekend. PVC is 2”. I have a very short length of pvc on the return side which is about 20”. Too tight to plumb straight so I’m thinking of doing a vertical install per the red markup in the attached photo. My thought was to cut out a 12” section from existing piping, add some 90s and get the SWG in there. Should I avoid adding in the extra 4 90s? I seem to find conflicting opinions on 90s vs sweep 90s. Any better ideas to plumb I’m overlooking?

Any room to move the filter back (left in pic)?
Maybe 12-18”? But maybe that will work.
It gets a little tight with the AC units and needing access to service. Worried about head loss with all the 90s in a vertical short install but I think my options are pretty limited.

You say you have 20 " now. That's just enough for the cell and flow switch. Moving the filter back we'll just give you a little room to complete the installation without a bunch of '90s.

Probably a better option to keep everything straight. Can I get away with cutting both sections of pipe in the middle where the red line is? Or does there need to be more space on either side? I’ve never owned a pool before and I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t know what the red handle does so not sure how or what it impacts if relocating the filter back a foot.

You should have no issues cutting there. Leave about 1.5" of pipe to fit a fitting. The red handle is just a valve for the hose bib/spigot. It can be used to drain a a little water if your pool level is too high.
