Opening Green Pool question

Hi everyone,

My pool is scheduled to open in about 4 weeks. I just had a look today, and it's already turning green. I guess it's due to the very mild winter we had in the GTA this year. My question is, should I add any liquid chlorine to get the process started to kill the algae? Does the pool pump need to be running for me to add the chlorine, or should I just wait the 4 weeks and deal with the swamp then?

Depends on your own preference. If it were me I’d probably start adding chlorine and running my robot to mix it around. Or use the guidance here on TFP about how to open your own pool so you can just get right down to it. Though my advice is always of an impatient person. I cannot see something wrong with my pool and stay relaxed.

Not without being able to circulate it / brush it well. It's heavier than water and may puddle up on the bottom.


With only a couple nights left below freezing (3? If the extended forecast holds true) push the open date much sooner while the algae is still mostly dormant. A few hours below freezing won't matter for 12k gallons of 40+ degree water. Run the pump overnight for insurance just in case.

About two weeks ago, I pulled two return freeze plugs and removed the Gizmos from the skimmers and began running the pump 1 week before cover removal. Set the values to supply the water ONLY from the skimmers (2) and return to ONLY the two wall returns that had the plugs removed. I just set pump timer to run between 3 AM and 7 AM when we dipped close to freezing (or below). Added about 10-12 ppm of Liquid CL by peeling back the cover at the shallow end...and the pool looked great when the cover came off a week later. A couple of days after that...after cleaning out a few leaves and SLAM, the pool was perfect.
