What are the ramifications of closing a fiberglass pool at double the SLAM level for your CYA? Could a chlorine level that high harm the fiberglass gelcoat, skimmer or returns since the chlorine may remain above SLAM level for several months? If it could, is there any way to lower the chlorine level without opening the pool back up to distribute a chlorine neutralizer?
I’m asking these questions because I found out that my pool service added several gallons of liquid chlorine to our pool at closing by mistake and now the FC is at double SLAM level. FC is approximately 36 and CYA is 45. Since we have a mesh cover that lets rainwater into the pool, the owner of the pool service claims that a chlorine level that high won’t hurt anything since rain water will lower the chlorine over the winter. It could take several months before the FC drops below SLAM level from rain though so I’m not sure if his argument is valid. According to a fiberglass pool Use and Care Guide that I found online, superchlorination over 10 ppms isn’t recommended, which has me worried since our FC level is 3 times that.
I went to a pool store for advice about what to do about the high chlorine level and was told that the chlorine neutralizer that they sell cannot be used unless the pump is running to mix in the chemicals. Since the pool has been winterized, the store manager advised me to drain water out a few times and add water back to lower the chlorine level. I really don’t want to do this since it would deplete the CYA, it is supposedly risky to drain water out of a fiberglass pool, and draining the pool can void the warranty.
If there are any fiberglass pool experts on here, I’m interested in hearing your input regarding the ramifications of closing a pool at double slam level.
