I just joined this AM. I have an inground pool about twelve years old. I ditched my SWG when my third one only lasted about 60 days, and have been using tabs & shock for about three years. The result is CYA over 180, and I'm now draining my pool. I see now tabs are not the fix I had thought or maybe these are, I'm not sure. I'd like thoughts on sanitizing the pool water going forward. Please share any successful approaches based on your experiences. Thank you.

Hey Monk and Welcome !!!!

Which SWG did you have ? What's the story there with the failures ? A factory dud like the 60 day unit does happen from time to time but usually it's chemistry or unnecessary acid baths that kill them.

They are hands down the way to go. Tabs or powdered shock jack your CYA or CH and there's no way around that. Many add copper too if they were 5 in 1 or 'xtra blue'. Liquid chlorine adds nothing extra but chlorine, but many tire of lugging jugs.

M,

Most SWCGs last 5 to 7 years... A lot depends on the size of the pool and the size rating of the cell.

75% of all cell issues are not the cell itself, but rather the pool owner...

I would almost rather fill my pools in with dirt if they were not saltwater pools.

Thanks,

Jim R.

All pentair products, IC40 SWG. Pentair tech was zero help and this more than anything pushed me away. My first IC40 lasted about six years, second less than two, third less than 60 days. Now the price is double and I'm not sure what to expect so it is hard to pay $1200 for something which comes with a thirty day warranty. I'm not sure what the warranty is now, but thirty days was the warranty four years ago. Thanks for sharing.

I'm refilling my pool with all fresh water and wanted to know if I should start adding chlorine at this point...I can't run the pool equipment for about two more feet of filling. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

It'll be fine, especially overnight with no UV. 5ppm isn't going to hurt if you want to add FC now, but you need to brush it well with no circulation. As soon as it's running, get 30 ppm of CYA soaking in a sock in front of a return, carrot on a stick like.

A half hour later it'll probably be mush and squeeze out.

Until it's dissolved and has a day or two to mix, pay frequent attention to the FC, it'll burn off in hours with no or very little CYA.
