Backwashing Sand Filter - No MPV or valve?

I was trying to help someone understand their pool today and cover the basics, but I'm stumped on how to tell him how to backwash. I believe it is a sand filter, but no MPV or the push/pull type valve could be found.
Not the greatest picture and the label provided no info to me. Any ideas how he would backwash?

Yeah, how do you open the thing? I did not see a band or anything removable around the middle.

Press the locking tab and then unscrew the band.
