Yes, that's smart.

You don't have mustard algae, it's not common. That's just plain old algae, which SLAM can take care of...
Higher FC levels will only serve to use more chlorine and $$ for no practical effect.

But let's get a new CYA reading and make sure SLAM FC levels are good. Hang in there.
I will check my cya when I get home from work. (7 hrs)

So has anyone successfully done this and had a life (ie work )outside the home? I tried searching fir a person in a similar situation but didn’t get any results

I can try but I’ve enlisted 2 other family members so that’s good! Also crazy my cya is 30. I checked it 2 times. I lost 20 since last Sunday…. We haven’t been swimming much since this started and only had only a few days of rain. So bc of this my new slam level is 12. I know in the last week we’ve never seen it below a 12… so why do I still have algae if we’ve been maintaining over 12. I’m so confused 😐

Have you scoured every inch hiding in plain sight ? Light niches, ladder rails, etc ? Somebody found their stair trim all gunked up the other day upon closer inspection.

Literally every inch needs checking if it's wet. (And subsequent cleaning if found to be growing stuffs).

I just reread the thread (albeit quickly) and saw no mention of brushing. How often are you brushing ?

Also clean the cartridges now that the bulk of it is killed and filtered.

Brushing 2-4 times a day. It’s an above ground pool so no lights. I just replaced my filter again but usually rinse it via “jet” setting on hose. Took the ladder out a week or more ago before slam started. We have patched a couple holes with flex seal tape and those are coming up a bit…. Maybe algae is hiding under there? We prob need to put a new piece of tape over the flappy part but I do go over that area with the brush…

Ok GREAT for all of that ^^^^^

What kind of environmental crud is falling in the pool ? Our lattitude is late to the blooming/flowering party and you're likely just finishing up. Heck. I still have a few things that haven't popped yet. Most of what you're seeing accumulate could be from that and not algae.

But that wont lose FC overnight.

Get a snorkle mask on and check any seams. If you have flexible pipes with the ridges like a shop vac hose, take them off and soak them in 50/50 bleach.
Pass a rag through on a string to wipe the crannies and the bleach will get the nooks.

Good idea… but wouldn’t the water going through those “kill” anything in the tubes/filter hoses since it’s been at slam level or above?

Algae grows a biofilm to protect itself from harsh environments. Hence, the need to brush frequently. Each brushing removes another layer for more to be exposed and killed by the water. Eventually you get it all and pass your OCLT. But you haven't brushed your pipes once. The corrugated ridges are like an algae playground.

The PH test is not accurate with a FC over 10.

We will do this!! Filter hoses we are coming for you!😂

Ps still curious about how my cya level dropped from 50 to 30 in about 8 days….

Does a copper algaecide lower cya? Asking for a friend….🫣

No but it might raise your stains. Per my friend. ;)

It could have been on the fence in the 40s, lost a few and is now skewing the other way. The test is really only good to +/- 10 anyway and if the CYA was truly a 40, either would be acceptable.

Also, you tested this last one after work and CYA needs overhead sun per taylor. You need experience with that before you start experimenting with other ways to do it.

So at 5:30pm it was pretty overhead still. Would it be best to try tomorrow at say 10am?

That'd be more overhead-y than 5:30p, but not by much. The mid point of your day is 1pm, so I'd want 12p to 2p while you get comfortable with the test. It can wait until thats convenient (and sunny) because you're close enough for now.

So I should maintain slam at cya of 50 or the new cya of 30? I should add I basically filled the tube all the way to top for the cya level.

Sure would save me in chlorine…

You can probably find people to argue either way. The newest test is the most important VS the newest test is invalid/skewed. I'd split the difference myself @ 40.
