Raised my CYA now have no FC

Waiting on the swcg to increase fc from zero is a recipe for algae- the swg simply takes too long to increase fc & things proliferate in the meantime.

No need for hope- lets get proof.
#1 Do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test at target fc levels w/ the swg off to rule out that something is brewing.
* If you pass you can then do an overnight chlorine gain test with the swg on.
* If you fail it’s SLAM Process time.

Put your swcg make & model (& other equipment details) in your signature & we can help you with runtimes & outputs
Ok I updated my signature with more details and will do the OCLT tonight.

Edit: hmm looks like the signature didn’t pop up. At least on mobile. Here’s what I have:

In ground plaster/pebble pool with spa. 9800 gallons. Jandy CS-250 filter, Jandy VS FLOPRO pump, Jandy JXi heater, Jandy Tru Clear SWG, Jandy PSB110 air blower, Aqualink automation. First filled in August 2022, acid washed Jan 2023 due to massive scale buildup.

I finally did the OCLT last night (I didn’t realize the kit I had wasn’t sufficient for this test so I got the right one). The difference was slight: 8 drops last night and 7 drops this morning.

So I guess I just need to get some more liquid chlorine and pour it in to get to 7 now that my CYA is correct?

What is your cya?

👍🏻 if you passed the oclt & your water is clear
then target range fc is 5-10ppm
FC/CYA Levels
so dose with liquid chlorine to somewhere in that range today to ensure you don’t fall below minimum & then tonight do an overnight chlorine gain test to see what your cell is producing.
The procedure goes as follows:
Turn swg up to 100% & ensure it is set to run all night.
Test an fc sample after dark
(note the time)
& test another in the am before sunrise (note the time)
Determine the difference in the 2 fc samples (use ppm not drops)
Determine the number of hours between the samples.
Compare that with what
PoolMath effects of adding says - it may not line up exactly depending upon the age of your cell but it will give you an idea especially if it’s way off.
Example: for 9 hours @100% in your pool volume this is approximately what you cell should produce 👇

I think I’m good now, thanks. But I think I’ll take Mdragger’s suggestion to test my SWG to confirm it’s generating chlorine properly.
Great job! Nice to see another successful TFP pool. Only things I'd add is to error on the high side with your FC level for the CYA reading. If you need to adjust the swg do it slowly. Expect the FC to go up and down a bit. You are adding a constant amount of FC while pool FC demand swings depending on a lot of things. If you run on the high side with FC you'll never get into danger territory. I live down the eastern coast of Florida near W Palm Beach so I understand the gully washers you get. Rule of thumb for me was to check salt with a K-1766 salt test plus CYA after 3 gully washers. Then bring it up to the max salt/CYA range. Don't rely on the salt reading from the swg. Sooner or later they always seem to get unreliable. Down pours usually require draining the pool and it's amazing how much salt/CYA is lost when this happens. Keep an eye on this and pretty soon you'll be on easy street the TFP way.

I hope this helps.

I finally got around to doing my overnight SWG test. Pool Math shows I should have seen a 5.2 FC increase but it only went up 4.5 last night. Should I be concerned?

Also as an aside, I can’t figure out how to get the lid off my SWG (Jandy TruClear). When the pool was first filled, we had some trouble with that and I remember the pool guy using water pressure to pop it off but I can’t remember how he arranged the valves to do it. Any thoughts?

How long was the test period that got the 4.5ppm rise?

That shows your SWG is pumping out a good amount of chlorine.

I think we are seeing some SWG specifications are optimistic marketing. There are no regulations or Consumer Reports to keep manufacturer performance claims honest. It may also be that the chemical soup your pool water has is not optimum for cell performance.

I have never had a TruClear in my hands to find out.

The test was just shy of 11 hours. 8pm to 6:45am.

I didn’t measure it when I filled. But it’s what the pool builder told me and what was on the letter they provided to give to the city for sewer bill credit.
Might be worth checking although I doubt is is off enough to make the 20% difference. I found Pool Math extremely accurate in estimating additions of FC for my swg for the first 3 years before I sold the house. I'm sure it would eventually have declined. I also monitored stayed very tight with TFP ranges.
