I need to add stabilizer to my pool. It is HTH granular stabilizer. The instructions say to slowly pour it in the skimmer but I think I heard someone say to put it in a sock In front of the return. Is one way better than the other or does it really matter? Thanks

From Pool School:

"Solid/granular CYA should be placed in a sock and the sock put in the skimmer basket or suspended in front of a pool return. If suspending near a return jet, ensure the sock cannot rest against the pool surface since the granules are acidic and could potentially discolor the surface. After adding CYA you should leave the pump running for 24 hours and not backwash/clean the filter for a week. After soaking for about 30 minutes, squeezing the sock periodically will help it to dissolve faster. Test and dose chemicals in your pool assuming the amount of CYA added is in the pool according to Poolmath. CYA can be tested the day after it is fully dissolved from the sock."

Oh, one thing I will share that I think sped up my process a little. I would pull the sock out of the skimmer and stick it under the surface of the pool, in front of my jet to do the squeezing. This way I could see the milky white coming out of the sock and then be pushed away by the jet. I would hold it under and squeeze and massage until no more white would come out. Then back into skimmer for an hour and repeat.

Ah, my skimmer and the return jet aren't next to each other. I'd have to carry it across the pool for the closet one.
