I have well water and my pool is really bad with iron. We have a 15,600 gallon pool. First year trying the polyfil trick but I feel like it’s not really pulling up as much as other pictures I’ve seen. We are using a transfer pump split between 2 tubs of polyfil. I see SOME stuff coming out, but I feel like there should be more. Is there a better set up for this? How long should I run the pump daily? And should I be using this filter method if I’ve added metal out?
I also have socks over my return jets that are pulling metal as well. I also read to fill your skimmer with polyfil, is this safe to do? I don’t want polyfil getting sucked into my system. Use a sock? Don’t do it? Do it?

Use a sock or a thin tshirt tied in a knot to contain the polyfill in the skimmers.
You’re going to want to filter 24/7 until you remove all the visible iron from the water.
This can take several days - it isn’t an overnight success especially if theres alot of iron which seems to be your case.
What is sequestered by the metal out wont be captured nor will it be visible until the sequesterant wears off.

Hello, neighbor!
We went through the same issue with our initial fill water in '20. See how we cleared ours in the below thread.

I will post my full results tomorrow. My Taylor kit should be here by then. My strip test shows everything good except FC and TC are at 1 so I want to add more chlorine but I’m afraid to because of the metal! I just fought an algae battle and I don’t want to do it again. So I will add some tomorrow.
It feels constant this year; if it’s not algae, it’s metal. We’ve been at our pool for over a month being unswimmable and my child is so sad.

I’ll post these tomorrow when my Taylor kit finally gets delivered! Hoping that they sent all the correct regents, however. Lol. Currently I’m going between test strips and pool store. Test strips look on point except my Fc and Ch are at 1 and I think I want it to be a little higher. This is my first year taking care of a pool and I just fought a giant algae issue which I don’t wanna do again. If I’m not fixing the algae, I’m fixing the metals.

I’ll do that!
So no metal out, just keep doing what I’m doing with the polyfil?

Hey neighbor!!! I actually read your post earlier today and it was the one that inspired me to post a picture of my set up because it’s nowhere near as good as what you did and I needed to make sure that it’s good enough. I’m no engineer and I can’t get my family on board with helping me build a better filter.
Did you leave your polyfilter (that’s what I’m calling it these days) running 24/7 for the whole week or did you turn it off every night?

We ran it 24/7! Stopped it daily so I could drag it over to the side of the house and dump it out and rinse it out for reuse. It was amazing at how much it collected. Thankfully, we top off through our softener, so we've never had to use it again. You ever in Lincoln? We still have the blue drum.
