Typically we recommend adding 5 ppm of chlorine daily until your kit arrives. For your pool that would be about half a gallon of 10% liquid chlorine. I recommend the Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid from Walmart, but Lowes, Home Depot, and most hardware stores will have liquid chlorine as well.
I used the pool essentials last week to shock while we were gone for the week on vacation it's cheap in my area $5-7

Walmart is $5.67 and Lowes is $7.78 in most places. Did we go over the date codes yet ? It breaks down over time and you want as fresh as possible, 3 months at most. The code will be 23XXX or XXX23. It's day XXX in 23. So today is the 170th day and it would would say 23170.

I knew about degradation but reading date codes was new to me. I appreciate it

Went ahead and added 64oz.. of pool essentials and I have a basic Taylor test kit for the time being to test free chlorine slowly but surely making the switch to a fully solo pool maintenance program

The main problem with high CYA besides needing to dump massive amounts of chlorine in to get it above the minimum sanitary level is you won’t be able to accurately measure PH above 10ppm Chlorine. So you testing will never be accurate.

That said you need a Taylor 2006 or TF-100 with FAS DPD chlorine testing. Start by ordering that and we’ll be able to help you with accurate testing.

I started the TFP method 2 months ago after our second green pool with the local maintenance company. It is incredibly easy and honestly, pretty fun. Highly recommended but we can’t guide you with inaccurate pool store testing numbers.
Got my test kit in today and results from my first time using it are

270 ppm calcium 27 drops r 0012

1.0 ppm free chlorine

90 ppm T/A

PH and CYA in picture

So, with the cya, you need to look down through the tube, not through the side. You should be outside, with the sun at your back.

For CYA add the reagent per the instruction into the small bottle and shake per the directions (I think 30 seconds). Then fill to the 100 line, and look down through the top holding it at waist level with your back to the sun outside. If you see the dot still fill to 90, look through the top again. Continue to 80, 70, etc. Once you can’t see the dot anymore that’s your CYA.

Here are instructions for the FAS DPD Chlorine test. It’s really easy, uses the dry product not the block.

EDIT: Nevermind looks like you have that in your response, misread the pictures part.

i followed these instructions since its the same test.. i took picture after it had sat for a while but i did pour from little bottle into test tube looking down

Add FC, yesterday.

Round the CYA to 60. It's not linear between the lines and can't be read by fractions.

I'd call the Ph a 7.7.

TA is great.

What's your fill water CH ? If high, I'd leave the CH as is because it will rise on its own. If the fill water is low CH, add to get to 350 CH

I didn't test fill water since I didn't have test kit at the fill time.. do I just fill a bucket and test from tap? And go from there?

Aim above target range and fall back into it, as you learn. Notice how much leeway there is up to SLAM ? Now notice how much leeway is below target range ?

Min is lava. Avoid it at all costs.

If you have a water softener, you want to test the water that gets to the pool be it softened or hard.

With no softener, any tap/spigot tests the same.

sorry what do you mean by lava? I'm a believer of better to look dumb and ask,,, than be dumb and not ask.. . also since i'm stil on a deep learning curve learning to go full solo on my maintenance,, what is the peoples opinion on non stablized cal hypo shock

Lava as in never touch it or you’ll get burned. Minimum should never be hit, and especially exceeded.

Cal Hypo includes calcium. Your CH levels are a little low so I don’t think it would harm anything, but I’d stick to liquid chlorine since it’s probably cheaper and you can treat the CH issue (which is minor) with topping off the pool or directly treating CH.
