Hello all! We are new saltwater AG pool owners. As far as we know, we have done everything correctly as far as set up, chemicals, etc. Our pool has been up and running for about 2 weeks, and our chlorine levels are at 0. We are in the process of trying to balance out all the levels. I’ll give you the details of our set up, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

24’x52” Coleman vinyl pool
Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter Pump & Saltwater System CG-26679EG
Hayward skimmer
Saline levels at 4560 ppm
Hardness around 200
PH between 7-8
Alkalinity around 180
CYA 0

After you swap out some water to lower the salinity, you will need to raise the CYA. Add cyanuric acid. Any chlorine you are adding is getting used up by the uv from the sun. SWG are great for maintaining FC levels but not so great at raising FC levels.

Good catch. IF the SWG is producing, at 0 CYA it may be losing chlorine to the sun as fast as it can make it.

How did you measure this?

I would get 3ppm of liquid chlorine in this pool now and add 3ppm per day until you get this sorted out.
We have a digital saline tester, so it should be accurate. Is too much salt possibly causing a problem with the SWG functioning properly?

We are planning on adding Cyanuric acid tonight, trying the sock method to hopefully avoid the problem of it not dissolving.
Do we *have* to drain the pool and add fresh water to lower salinity levels? What are the issues that could arise from a higher salinity level? (I think I remember reading corrosion?)

Accurate, maybe. When was the last time you calibrated the meter? Which salinity meter is it?

I might suggest that the Taylor K-1515 is the gold standard for measuring salinity. I would trust this drop test over a meter any day of the week.

We just got it, I would have to look to see what brand it is. I just needed something to tell me at least a ballpark of where we were at, since we poured in all the salt and were still getting a zero for chlorine levels (while running the SWG per the instructions)
