Opened our 18x48in pool water was really clear upgraded our filter to the intex Krystal clear followed instructions on installing turned pump on and filtered great for about 15 minutes then flow slowed way down. I researched a bit and found the sand level might be too high so we removed some sand and it ran for 2 hours before the flow slowed down again to where we needed another backwash. I have no idea what to do here I don’t want to put in my starter chemicals in the pool until this is resolved been open for 3 days.

So it’s been full for 3 days with no chlorine? Is this a fresh fill?
Its very possible you have algae which is overwhelming your filter.

It was opened from the winter we had winterized it and opened it to install the new pump but we have been backwashing so much I feel to dump all our opening chemicals in if I keep draining it with the backwash

Without chlorine you will have algae. Get some chlorine in the water ASAP
FC/CYA Levels
After you have target fc levels in the water you can do an
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to rule out algae. It may be there even if you don’t see it.
