What to do before closing?!?!

I’ll try to keep my pool season story brief but some back story is needed. We had some copper in our pool so the pool store gave us metal out which worked great for the copper but put our phosphates at 2,500. About mid summer we had a leak and until we got it fixed we had to add water from our well. Again, we have metal in the pool. It’s causing staining on our white fiberglass pool. So now my question is this…what should I do before closing the pool in a month or so? Should I treat again with metal out but likely increase phosphates again? I’m so worried about opening the pool in the spring and having either metal staining or crazy phosphate levels. HELP!

Phosphates are the least of your problems. I would ignore that issue. Copper is the worst to deal with. How did you get copper in the water? As for the iron (from your well), it will remain unless you have fresh water delivered or over time manage to filter some of it out by polyfill or other method. To remove iron staining you can try an Ascorbic Acid treatment, but again that only removes the substance from the walls and puts it into the water. It's still there, so that's an ideal time to exchange (safely) with fresh water.

I have no idea how the copper got in there. It was pool store test so maybe not accurate? I have used Ascorbic acid for the iron and it does remove the stains but of course they return later. Is there a safe sequestering agent for iron? After joining this group I use a Taylor Test kit to test my water. It’s been AMAZING on the chemical end of things. And eye opening. I feel like pool stores just had me running in circles with products.

Actually I do remember where the copper came from. I used an algaecide that had copper as an ingredient. Obviously not doing that any longer since joining this group.

Is there a safe sequestering agent for iron?

ProTeam's Metal Magic and Jack's Magic the Pink Stuff (regular), the Blue Stuff (fresh plaster), and the Purple Stuff (SWG) are some of the top sequestrants. You can also find other brands with similar products, some of which are noticeably less expensive. Sequestrants based on HEDP, phosphonic acid, or phosphonic acid derivatives are the most effective.

I used an algaecide that had copper as an ingredient.

At least you know now. Water exchanges during winter prep and the closing season may help to lower an residual copper in the water.
