going off someone else questions and replies I want to clarify and see if i get this correct. after treating as usual we expected storms etc and so i covered the pool with the cover/solar and havnt had an opportunity to be in nor uncover the pool for about a week. give or take. ive tried to run the pump a bit everyday but not the last 2 1/2-3 days and i go to check the levels today and my chlorine test comes back orange, and a reply i saw on here suggests maybe being covered that that may hav kept the sun from allowing chlorine to escape seeing as its been under wraps for a good 5 or so days. i was SHOCKED to see the bright orange/red color for the chlorine level. my ph seems fine at the 7.8+ but its still above as well as I’m used too as I'm new to the cover. can anyone help, please and thank you

Sunlight consumes chlorine. If it's covered, the pool will hold chlorine for much, much longer.
Do you have a salt water pool? What do you use to chlorinate? Btw, that test kit isn't precise or accurate enough. You'll want to get a good test kit. Test Kits Compared

thank you love, its not a salt water pool its vinyl above ground and, been using liquid chlorinator. I've been so proud of myself with keeping the levels happy, lol. but I've not had a cover before, lol. i was shocked to see the orange but i saw a post about the cover not letting chlorine escape. do you know, will it be safe to use like this or should it set for a time? thank you so much for responding to my questions

Without knowing the exact FC level and your CYA level it’s hard to say. Do you have an FAS/DPD test so you can find out what the FC actually is?
no, i dont, but, i also saw posts saying to dilute the pool water then do the reading is this something similar to what u are asking? thank you for helping

Maybe, but you’d have to use distilled water. Actually tap water, while it likely has some chlorine in it from the purification processes at water treatment plants, is going to be a negligible FC level compared to whatever that is indicating, so give it a whirl.
But ultimately a better test process that includes the FAS/DPD chlorine test is something any pool owner should invest in.
