Liquid Chlorine
Hey guys, I have just started up my pool and I am currently doing the SLAM method. I am just wondering if it usual for your chlorine to drop really quick within the first day? I have already added about 8 gallons of liquid chlorine and it went from DARK green to a light blue green. I first dumped my chlorine at about 2AM and my chlorine was at 1ppm when i woke up at 12. So i added 4 more gallons and I am at only 4ppm. my CYA is 20.
Also, last question would be.... Is it worth to get some shock or tablets in the mean time to raise my CYA as well as add chlorine to the pool?

Appreciate everything you guys do, thanks for chimming in!

You lose FC to two things - organics and the sun. FC of 20 is a little low and I'd put another 10ppm of stabilizer in to bring it to 30 for your SLAM.

Powdered shock and tablets add other chems to the water you don't necessarily want (though you could use trichlor / dichlor to add some more stabilizer, I suppose). Liquid chlorine is the most reliable way to add FC to the pool without adding other chems you don't always want to add. :)

If it's only one day you're really early in the process. Going to light blue green means it's working. Stay the course :)

Another question??? How long would you say it takes to get the pool to crystal clear on average on fresh startup. I still have pulled some leafs and debri out, granted its not tons. I would figure by now it should be at least more than 75% clear throughout the pool. As of right now, the pool is clear maybe a foot down all the way across the pool. And i have maintained the slam method pretty close to 10ppm. It will be a week friday.

P.S. Today, Thursday. Is the first day I was actually able to vacuum the pool. Got a decent amount green algae at the bottom. I have brushed almost everyday though.

It really depends on too many factors to know. We’ve seen SLAMs that last days and some that last weeks or longer.

Hey back here again, the pool has cleared slightly more than it did before. Bought new filters, but the process is still extremely slow. Should I continue slamming until my water is clear? I only had a drop of 1ppm FC last night.

Yep, you want to make sure every bit of algae is gone from your pool, dead or alive, to avoid it from creeping back. Keep cleaning the filters whenever the pressure raises by 25% from the clean pressure, keep the pump going 24/7, keep the FC up so algae doesn't take root again. :) You're in the home stretch!

The SLAM is complete when....
1. Your Pool water is crystal clear with no visible sign of algae
2. You passed the OCLT losing not more than 1 ppm of FC
3. Your CC's test is either .5 ppm or 0 ppm.

Another question, should I have the skimmer drain valve basically closed so all of the water is pulling from the main drain?
