Controlling a Mastertemp 300 and a Raypak 8450 Heat Pump from an Easytouch 8p

Hi,

I was looking for some guidance on hooking up a heat pump to my existing pool system which has a Mastertemp 300 connected to an Easytouch 8P. I picked up a Raypak 8540 which I want to hook up to use for heating most of the time to save cost and save the propane for times when the extra BTUs are needed. I plan to run the heat pump in series before the propane heater and utilize the AUX mode on the Raypak. I was wondering is anyone has a best practice on controlling the two heaters from the Easytouch. Will I be able to toggle one or both heaters on or off using relays to toggle the low voltage and take advantage of the temperature monitoring in the Easytouch? If anyone has done this already with a secondary heat pump, I would love to hear your setup.

I haven't personally done this, but it should be doable. The EasyTouch allows you to substitute a heat pump for solar heating. See the "Settings Menu: Solar" section of the ET manual. You should then be able to set the pool's heat to "Solar preferred" and have the heat pump kick on first when that would be sufficient, and the gas heater only when needed.

Below is a way to connect control of Pentair automation - Easy Touch, IntelliTouch, IntelliConnect, IntelliCenter - with a Hayward Heat Pump. Similar techniques should work for your Raypak Heat Pump..

1. Run AC power to the heater without any relays. Circuit breaker direct to heater AC input.
2. Inside your EasyTouch, take an unused Aux relay and connect its two pin coil plug to the Electric heater output on the main circuit card. It has a two pin plug just like all the Aux relays do.
3. At this point you should be able to turn the set point for the temperature you want up and down (on the EasyTouch) and make the relay go on and off.
4. You may have to turn on the heat function in your EasyTouch first.
5. Assuming you can turn the relay on and off, then open up your heater and find the wiring that goes to the 2 wire remote control... See page 46 in https://s3.amazonaws.com/AWSProd/sites/raypakcom/documents/6000.56.pdf for the Raypak 2 wire control.
6. Now wire your EasyTouch relay, that is now controlled by the electric heater output, to the 2 wire automation control.
7. If you now turn on your heater and set it for max temp, then "in theory" the heater should run until the EasyTouch sees the temperature it wants. When that happens the relay opens and the heater stops.
8. Once the temperature drops below the set point the relay closes again and "in theory" the heater will turn on.

I belive the way the ET works is in the programming you have a choice of heaters for your spa and/or pool.

The automation is supposed to regulate temperature via the heat pump 1st - if it can not maintain temp it reverts to the gas heater.

People have reported that after that it does not go back to the heat pump to maintain. You have to switch it manually.

You may have to experiment with the ET setup a bit to see the best way to make it work for you. Let us know what you figure out.
