Hayward DE4800 Air Relief Assembly

I'm in the process of replacing the Filter Grids and the Air Relief assembly in my Hayward DE4800 filter. The new Air Relief assembly (the little "finger" that attaches to the top of the manifold) sticks straight up, and hits the inside of the upper filter housing. My question is, if I reassemble the filter housing with the air relief assembly hitting the housing, won't I damage it, breaking or fracturing the hard plastic tube?
The old piece has a bend to it, but I'm not sure whether it started out like that, or got bent after a few years inside the housing? Should I heat the tube and gently bend it so that it fits under the housing?
I don't want to exacerbate the problem I already have (DE being pumped back into the pool through the outlets), which is why I'm replacing the grids etc.
Thanks...

So I replaced all the grids and the air relief assembly in response to dirty DE being pushed into the pool through the outlets on startup. I checked the manifold and the inlet pipe and did not detect any cracks or other ways that the water might be returning to the pool. I'm wondering whether I should think about replacing the entire filter next year? I am so frustrated seeing the green DE in the bottom of the pool everyday. All the test numbers are steady and within range, but I have to brush the pool and vacuum two or three times a week to manage the DE outflow.
