One inch tabs in three inch feeder

I have one inch tabs because that's all I could get due to the shortage. Our Bestway pool came with a chlorinator that screws onto the return line and takes four tablets. It was running out way too fast and not keeping enough chlorine in the pool, so I replaced it with a floating three inch feeder. This also freed up the return line for our robot vac.

I bet you can see where this is going. I poured a bunch of tablets in, set the damper to the smallest I could and let it float away. Four days or so later about 3/4 of the tabs are gone and the chlorine level doubled to 8 ppm. Not good. CYA is well above the 40 mark on our K2006 kit so I have no real idea how high it is. It was 43 before I started the feeder.

Any suggestions for slowing down the feed rate? Only thing I can think of is putting hot glue on half or more of the damper holes to keep them shut. Would probably also permanently stop me from adjusting how much goes through.

hmmm... time to break this down :)

There are 3 ways to run a pool and all 3 will work and all 3 cost the same amount in the end and use the same amount of chlorine in the end...

1. use pucks just like you are doing, the CYA will raise till the pool turns green, the CYA is over 100 and the only way out is to empty 50% or more of the pool water and refill.. start over on adding pucks..

2. daily adding of liquid chlorine, your pool is a pet, you have to take care of it daily..

3. salt water generator.. this is the route I went because I refuse to do #1 above and I travel so I can not do #2 above.. SWG is a great and wonderful option and if mine died today I would have one ordered tonight to replace it..

Once a SWG is good and your water is balanced you can leave for weeks and the SWG will continue to add chlorine daily to your pool.. just like you were there..

If you can not be there and do not want to do #1 or 2 go with option 3..

After 5 years your getting free chlorine from a SWG :)

What size pool do you have, always get 2 to 3 times the size of SWG, mine is 3 times the size.. you can run the SWG less and they last longer..

1" trichlor tablets. I'm mulling over the idea of keeping some and selling or returning the rest, and doing the liquid route. Idea being if I'm gone for a few days I can float some in the pool to keep it fed. SWG as nice as it sounds, not in the cards right now.

I see you have some kind of magic as your filter media. Might want to watch if that provides any issues. Sand is the best filter media for a Sand Filter.

I agree with Marty here, I switched back to regular sand from zeo media and I see no reason to use anything else now. It’s subjective, but my water seems clearer now than it ever was in the past. YMMV, but it’s probably more expensive for no difference.

Well, there's no cost in keeping it and the water is clearer than when I actually had sand so I'm going to keep it.

I'm not discounting your guy's experience by any means, I just had pretty awful results from the two sand filters (the included Bestway and the larger Intex we got) when they had sand in them. This water is almost 100% clear.

The upper limit of safe exposure is 10 ppm. Why are you saying 20 is OK?
That is not true. It is based on the FC/CYA ratio. That relates to active chlorine. A FC at SLAM level FC based on the CYA has less active chlorine than a public pool with 1 ppm FC and 0 CYA. In fact, it has less active chlorine than many tap waters in the USA.

I understand the chemical balance of CYA and FC for sanitization purposes but I don't think that's the only concern. When I stuck my hands in the water at 28 ppm they dried out thoroughly and quickly as compared to 10 ppm. I mean maybe 20 is OK but I'm not quite convinced that you're not going to get skin irritation and eye irritation.

28 ppm at what CYA level?
