Calcium hypochlorite - 56% FC amount?

Somebody please help me out. I have searched high and low and cannot find the info I need. I traditionally use a SWG but am switching to manual chlorine for a awhile.

Does anyone have the formula to calculate FC ppm amount using 56% cal hypo?

Pool math calculator only has 48 and 53. The container has recommended amounts (7oz per 10kg for maintenance and 12oz for shock) but it doesn't state how much those amounts should increase ppm by. I’ve tried to search other 56% cal hypo products for their instructions but everything online seems to be 65%.

I know it’s probably a minimal difference from 53% cal hypo. But I’m doing some serious record logs of my chlorine consumption right now due to traces of bromine in my pool. So I’d like to be as accurate as possible so I can know how much chlorine I am losing throughout the day. Also I’ll note that my CH is only at 70ppm right now so I will benefit from the calcium which is why I purchased.

That product is only 56% calcium hypochlorite. Find out what the other ingredients are.

It does not say what level chlorine is in the calcium hypochlorite.

56% cal hypo by weight is approximately 55.5% available chlorine by weight. 1 pound (16 oz) of 56% cal hypo added to 10,000 gallons of pool water will raise the FC by 6.66 ppm. The same calculations for 53% cal hypo would raise FC by 6.30 ppm. The difference is barely more than one drop of r-0871 titrant on the most sensitive DPD-FAS test (25mL water sample). You can use the 53% value in PoolMath, it’s accurate enough.

And I agree with @mknauss , you need to find out what other ingredients are in there … that tub looks suspiciously like it has other products in it besides cal-hypo.

Okay I just assumed that the 56% was reflective of the chlorine count. I supppse that is incorrect. I’ll search harder for other ingredients

Yeah… I know pretty much nothing about granular chlorine. I’ve only ever used liquid along side of my SWG. But I’m anticipating blowing through chlorine… perfect timing with the shortage. I grabbed this because I was running out of room to store liquid gallons.

This was a bulk bucket from Costco. Looks like it’s HTH brand. There’s very minimal ingredient information on the tub, which I don’t enjoy. I used it for the first time today and it seems like it has blue dye in it…

Might just try to sell this on marketplace and find alternative storage for liquid.

Post a picture of the front of the bucket.
I suspect the blue indicates copper.

After you told me that 56% wasn’t the strength of the cal hypo, I was able to find the product Online. Still having a really hard time finding ingredients list anywhere though…

I’m learning very quickly not to trust any pool chemicals. Liquid chlorine it is..

Fantastic news today though. Finished the halfway drain to dilute bromine bank on Thursday. Was able to get CYA established back to 30 yesterday and then started today with 5ppm FC and ended with 1.6ppm. Full sun all day so I was anticipating 0 given that bromine can’t stabilize.

Not out of the woods yet but hopeful this is a positive sign there’s hope for a chlorine pool. Starting SLAM tomorrow and depending on chlorine loss might turn my SWG back on after a week or so and rise CYA up to 70 and see how that holds.

Costco policy is you can return anything, for any reason, at any time. We have all heard the extreme examples of people returning 10 year old TVs. I don't think this is like that You tried it and then didn't like it / learned more about the product and don't want it anymore.
