Help! We had a major storm yesterday in which everything quickly became overrun with water and caused what I think is a significant amount of dirt and backwash to enter the pool. Pool was spotless and crystal clear before storm and now I am using a TF Pro test kit and my numbers are below. I have a pool service company take care of my pool and they said they will come today but I’m looking for advice. The pool company uses tricholor tablets for the chlorine. The pool is new and was only filled 6 weeks ago.

FC: 2
PH: 7.5
TA: 100
CH: 300
CYA: 80

Thank you for your help!

Your CYA is at 80 so your FC needs to be at a target of 9 to11 FC daily... Your pool company is about to take you into drain your pool territory probably within the week if they put more trichlor in... With trichlor there is no way your getting FC to 11 without also raising CYA.. This is not going to get rid of the green, I am just talking about daily operation.. Now that it is green a SLAM Process is needed and that will require draining part of you water to lower CYA to 30 or 40...

You have an algae outbreak because your FC is below the minimum of 6.. 6 is a cliff and you never want to drive off a cliff, you never want to get near a cliff...

The question is, are you going to follow TFP or are you going to allow your pool company to take care of your pool and deal with draining your pool every 2 to 3 months? and your pool turning green at least 1 or 2 times a month...

Thank you very much for the quick reply! What do you recommend to use for the SLAM? I am worried that I will not find any liquid chlorine anywhere!

seems like I am going to have to take over maintaining the pool. The company was here yesterday and they said that the FC was 10 but I find that hard to believe considering I just got a 2 this morning.

thank you again!

there are many places but it is going to take some calling around looking for 10% or 12.5% liquid chlorine or liquid chock...

This one is 6 dollars a gallon for 15 gallons, A little expensive but not much 15 Gallon Drum - Sodium Hypochlorite - SH - Bleach

Also check lowes, HD, Leslies, local grocery stores, Ace hardware.. lots of places.. I have atwoods here and get 10%

Not sure where in Maryland you are, but I have been consistently finding 10% liquid chlorine at ACE Hardware (in my case in Mt Airy, MD) and at some Walmarts. Walmart is the best price, but just go to walmart.com first and check the Walmart locations around you to see who has it.

Sorry for the follow-up and thank you for your help but my service company said the FC is 10+. Could the change in color of the pool be from a lot of dirt that entered the pool and not algae? Do they make tests for algae? Thank you!

It could be dirt.. believe your TF pro DPD FC test.. they can "say" anything they want, you test is truth...

Thanks the reason why i am questioning it is because I am waiting for my auto cover and the basin for the auto cover is full of dirt which all overflowed back into the pool and the raised spa is completely clear.

Very nice tile there... it could be dirt.. do you have a salt water generator?

lets get this going.. Please put your equipment and pool size in your signature so we know what we are dealing with... :)

Thank you! I’ve been meaning to update my signature. I have all Pentair equipment and a clean and clear plus 420. Pool is 800 SF and about 20K gallons.

it will be a salt pool but was going to wait a couple of months before we turn to it given the horror stories I have heard with salt and pebble.

I dont know what horror stories you are talking about. You are good to go to salt 30 days after the plaster is done.

Also you started this thread with test results that I believe are from your own test kit this morning. You need to get that FC up ASAP. Get it to a minimum of 10 to 12 based on your test kit.

Dont know what the rules are for SLAM a 6 week old pool. An expert will chime in on that.
