Hayward Heat Pump 140k BTU cracked PVC nut, 3 years old

Howdy

I took the cover off my heat pump (hp21404t) and noticed that a PVC compression nut/union was cracked. Upon further inspection, it was completely broken and fell off. I contacted Hayward who is giving me the option of A) buy new unit or B) get a new heat exchanger but I pay for the labor ($1100).. also, the exchanger is on backorder so who knows when it'll actually arrive.

I used this pump for 3 summers. This is insane especially since it's a $3000 unit. According to Hayward my warranty expired which also blows my mind. I cannot seem to get the PVC piece on its own, it appears it's all part of the exchanger. I cannot believe how bad of a company they are to deal with. My entire pool pump/system is all Hayward. Also, after doing some research, it appears there are other with the same exact problem all over the internet. My guess is Hayward knows this is some manufacturing defect which is why their warranty is cut so Dang short.

Anyone have any ideas on how this actually happened? And thoughts on what I can do?

My guess is it is freezing damage from not being properly winterized.

I think this thread had the same problem and I see you posted there also. Interesting that you are both on Long Island, NY.

Thanks for the comment. I have my pool closed by a reputable local company, I wonder if they'll reject the notion that it's on them for failing to winterize properly. I may have to give it a try.

I saw that other post. I reached out the original poster but haven't heard back yet. Could be that we have terrible pool stores on Long Island (lol).. or maybe the same one!

Here's an update for future reference. I had to file a complaint with BBB to which Hayward responded the next day. Over several email exchanges with a Tech, they decided to replace the whole heat exchanger and reduce the labor cost to me to a few hundred dollars. I accepted the proposal.

I've never been so disenfranchised with a company before. Such a short term warranty on an expensive piece of equipment should not be acceptable.

I am glad to hear Hayward steped up to a reasonable fix after you twisted their arm. It is unfortunate it came to that.

A HP uses refrigerent like an AC system. I am pretty sure you need to evacuate the refrigerant which requires special equipment and an EPA 608 Technician Certificate.

If so, $1100 in labor sounds excessive. My AC guy did something like that for ~$150.

I have the same Hayward heat pump, though not this problem yet. I'm wondering if proactively wrapping the nut with a band clamp (typically used for a radiator hose) might give it enough added strength to avoid this issue, or at least postpone it.
