Opening my spill over spa ahead of my pool. How do I sanitize?

I have a spillover spa attached to my pool and while it’s a little early to open the pool, I thought I would open the spa now. It’s the first time I’ve done this in stages so I hope my newbie question is okay.

I have a salt water chlorinator but since the water temp (when the spa is not heating) is too low, how else should I sanitize the pool?

I’ve seen those floating bromine dispensers in friend’s spas. Is that the easiest way to go?

Do not add bromine to a chlorine pool, ever. It will make it into a bromine pool.

Use liquid chlorine to chlorinate until your SWG comes online.

I think you should open the pool and the spa. I don't know what will be "closed" in your pool when you open your spa.

I can shut off two valves to close off the intake and outflow pipes to the pool.

I don’t want to take the cover off the pool because we have massive maple trees in the backyard that drop millions of keys in the late spring. I usually wait until this is over before opening the pool. I burned out a pump one year because the keys clogged up the skimmer and blocked the water.

How will you keep water from going over the spa spillover onto the cover and the closed pool?
