Saw a bit of rust peaking through the stones so I began to rake them back and I see this (pics below). It’s only on this panel - I assume because of dripping water from the inlet and skimmer. What should I do? How serious is this?

It looks like there may be some dirt or sand against the pool wall under the rocks. I would rake it all back and let the outer base of the pool dry out. You won't be able to remove the rust while the pool is up, but you can hit it with some rust inhibitor to try and stop the rust from progressing. Treat the bottom of the pool all the way around, then put fresh stone back around the wall, being careful not to scratch the finish. You don't want dirt or anything that will hold water up against your pool. Keep an eye on the rust going forward. If it gets worse you may need to take the pool down to see if it may be repaired.

If you have leaks from the skimmer or returns those need to be fixed. Also check the drainage of your yard and make sure water is not running to that spot in heavy rains. That area looks pretty wet for a few drips from a minor leak.

Thank you for your advice. I do appreciate it.

We are about to build a deck completely around the pool, so i’m wondering if I better just install a new pool now, instead of trying to do it in 2-3 years with the deck already around it - I wonder how people even do that?

You really do not want a steel pool wall below grade at all... Rust is cancer for pools... They now have resin pool walls that will never rust and the whole pool except 1 section is all resin... This pool can be installed in the ground..
  • Warrantied for semi-inground installation up to halfway (27 inches) in the ground

If you are thinking of a new pool anyway then I agree with going for the resin pool. Pick the size you want and go for it! If the pool you want is not available this season, my advice should get your pool through this summer if you keep an eye on it.

This is probably a stupid question, but how do you determine what pools are all-resin? Will they specifically state that?

They will say all resin pool wall... most are all resin with a steel wall, they try to pass it off as an all resin pool but it is not.. There are not many all resin pools and I only know of the company link I gave you..

You nailed it. I’m buying that one!!! Thanks a bunch.

I have 1 more question if you don’t mind answering.

My current pool is 20 feet. Based on hour experience, If I go 24 feet, how difficult will it be to level the extra 4 feet? Or should I go 21 foot, so I only have 1 more foot to level?

hmmm, Probably not that bad to level the rest of it... depends on you really, do you have the ability and the tools to level it? It is not hard, more labor intensive :)

The easy one would be the 21, I bet it would be VERY close to what you have now...

My Vogue pool had a catastrophic failure due to rust, and so did my sister's. Both were the same model Vogue pool. Hers lasted 7 years and mine lasted about 10. I have photos of both pools in my RIP rusty Vogue pool thread link in my signature.

17 years is amazing!

I agree with the suggestion to try to nurse your pool along for this season, if you can safely do so. I looked all last year, and didn’t see my pool become available until early this year. I jumped on it in February and with a couple of weeks the price went up. I bet if you start checking at year end you can get a good deal on one.
