What Does This Do?

I was cleaning my filters today and had a hard time getting the 4-way connector thing off the top and then noticed this little screen all clogged up. After removing some debris I could hear a suction break loose and everything came out fine.

I assume it is to prevent small debris from blowing back out to the pool. Would that suction/seal cause pressure to rise prematurely though? I had never experienced that before and my pressure seemed to hit the cleaning indicator faster than usual.

It allows air that may have gotten stuck in the tank to get sucked out. That way the tank slowly doesn't get filled with air.

So if that screen gets clogged it would seem it could cause pressure to rise sooner than expected?

It won't make any difference to the pressure.

If the pressure is rising too fast, it's due to the filters getting dirty.
