My SWCG I ordered arrived today and the plan is to install it late next week. Since it seems like I learn something new every time I ask a question, I though it might be good to ask what the best installation strategy might be for where to place the cell.
My guess would be right where the chlorine dispenser is now, or maybe in vertical pipe on the right going to the pool returns (the other pipe with the red shutoff handle next to it is for a waterfall. Would it be worthwhile not sending chlorinated water to the waterfall? I’m going to be redoing a bunch of the plumbing since one of the gate valves doesn’t shut off all the way anyway.

the other question would be whether I really need a check valve? The install instructions show one on the diagram, but one isn’t included and there’s no specific “you must install a check valve note” anywhere I can find. There’s no spa or other fun stuff so water just goes one direction.

The chlorinator is a great spot for it. The waterfalls still end up in the pool so you’ll want them sterilized also. Otherwise you’ll be flushing some possibly stagnant water if you don’t use them frequently.

B,

You don't need a check valve with a SWCG, as when it is off it is off.. I am "shocked" that you don't have one before the heater because it is a requirement when you use a tab feeder.. This is because the very low pH water from tablets in the feeder, can leak back into the heater when the pump is off and eat the heater from the inside.

I would put your new SWCG right where your tab feeder is now.

Thanks,

Jim R.

It’s a long story but the equipment is 20 years old and I had the chlorinator installed this summer by a pool company before realizing a SWCG was really a better choice. The pump stays on 24 hours so maybe they didn’t think it was necessary or it was 98F and 98% humidity and they were in a rush to get done. ;)
