Different FC results - “R-0870 w/ R-0871” vs. “Taylor K-1000 w/ R-0014”

Testing FC, using the K-1000 Taylor kit, it’s reading in the 5-10 range. But using the TF-100 drop kit (R-0870 powder with R-0871 FAS/DPD solution), I’m getting 3.5.

Is this within realm of variance for the K-1000 Kit? Or, could my solutions be old (kit is only a month or so old), or does the K-1000 kit test total chlorine (FC + CC)?

R-0003 with R-0871 is showing no CC though.... So I don’t think the K-1000 is testing total Chlorine.

I’m just a bit confused and want to be sure I’m getting good test results.

K-1000 does test Total Chlorine but as you said with new water & no CC then FC is going to equal TC. I'd have a hard time telling the difference between 3.5 & 5 using K-1000 kit.

Makes sense. I'm actually colorblind, so I'm reliant on my wife or kids to tell me which color it's reading. My guess is it's probably reading the 3-5 range and not the 5-10 range. A few mins ago, I tested again using both .. and my wife actually said she can't seem to tell the difference, so she just chose the higher number.

Yeah the K-1000 isn't as accurate as the drop test.
Note that there is no range on the test block. The 5 is used for a chlorine pool & the 10 is for a bromine pool. Disregard all the numbers under Br.

Ahh, makes complete sense. I was reading it as "3-5" range, and "5-10" range ..LOL ... I didn't even notice the "Br"

The OTO test, for TFP maintained FC levels, is pretty much only good for indicating if there is chlorine in the water. I let my kids use it as they like the color change.
FAS-DPD is the test you want to use.
