Yeah, I got the TF-100 plus the better of the salt tester kits. I'll add to my sig.

I was reading in some places that it's possible for Calcium-based shock to sometimes cause calcium flake deposits with salt-water pools. Up until the night I added shock, there were very few flakes after the initial "outbreak" that inspired this post about a month ago. The day after adding shock 2 nights ago, bam, lots of flakes. Wondering if that's a possibility? For example, today there's not much new in the way of flakes.

Checked the cell, some deposits going on but not massive. A few tiny, pebble-sized bits on the side closest to where the water goes back to the pool. I suppose I could clean the cell and see if that helps.

Used to work at a pool store (25 years ago, lol), we always recommended people shock their pool every 2-3 weeks to keep it clean, etc, almost like maintenance.

Maybe that's not the way now...I'm up for doing it differently. I haven't had any organics that I know of, definitely no algae, and the water is always clear.
 
There is no need to “shock” the pool based on a schedule if you routinely keep your FC above the minimum for your CYA per the FC/CYA Levels.
Shock is a verb, not a noun. What actual product or chemical have you been adding to the pool? If you are using calcium hypochlorite, then it’s possible the CSI locally is very high and causing the calcium flakes. Then as time passes, the flakes dissolve into the water and disappear.

Gotcha. That makes sense about the shock.

And, like you suggest, that's what I was thinking might be partly causing the flakes, since the flakes were correlated (time-wise) with putting a bag of shock in the night before. Especially since my overall pool numbers seem to be ok.

The only other factor might be phosphates. Isn't scale on the SWG often formed from Calcium Phosphate? I have high-ish phosphates right now, around 300ppm. Usually I don't worry about that too much, but maybe it's worth trying to bring it down to see if it helps.
 
If phosphate levels get well above 2000 ppb, then they could be a concern. But at your level, there is no concern.

A bag of “shock” ? I have no idea what that is. Shock is a verb not a noun. What specific product are you putting in the pool?

That is your mayor hurdle as of now. You are doing a great job trying to follow TFP guidelines, but havent fully committed. Keep reading and trust the guidance given, you wont regret it. I would totally get rid of the powder shock, which adds calcium. If you need to add chlorine use liquid bleach, which adds noting but leaves residual salt when used up. Did you download the PoolMath app to your phone? It helps keep track of your tests. Have a look at mine down below in my sig.

Totally trust the guidance, just still learning and re-learning. Won't be shocking the pool anymore for maintenance, just using SLAM, if needed.

I have 3 friends who have pools and "pool guys". All of them have had algae and other issues this summer. Me, it's just the weird flakes, which are pretty minimal overall. Everything else has been good, crystal clear water, etc. I'm definitely a proponent of doing it myself, measuring chlorine daily, using the right tests, and using the best products.
