Pentair FNS Plus 60 "backup ring"?

I am cleaning out my Pentair FNS Plus 60 and swimming in the bottom was this broken ring. The diagram tells me it is likely the "stainless steel backup ring". It is clearly broken (see picture) and appears it was only held together with two spot welds anyway. Is this necessary for operation? I can't even tell how it would attach itself inside to anything. Can I just toss it? Or do I need to repair/replace it?

So, I have a similar issue…although mine is bent (thought it was simply manufactured that way!). Did you ever get it fixed? I see we live in the same area….
