Hi,

After a disastrous start to the pool summer with our pump breaking. We installed a brand new pump, and got things moving this past weekend.
Bleach has been hard to find in bulk and I went through my stockpile in 2 days! Spent a whole day trying to find another source. (the local pool store-$$$$)

My numbers looked ok to start 0 FC, 7.5 PH, 30 CYA . I knew what to do! The pool started clearing up in a couple days-but then it seemed to stall....

This is my first year using the pool math app and it kept saying my CYA was too low- so I checked it again. Stupid me, did the test wrong and ended up showing 0 CYA and stupid me believed it! I added probably 3-4 lbs of stabalizer before I realized my mistake and pulled the sock full of granules out of the pool.

Long story short- my CYA level is now 90 and I think I need to drain my pool- and we're in drought conditions. I could cry.

I'm posting, hoping someone will have another solution for me.....but I know that's probably wishful thinking!

Too much stabilizer huh? :hammer: Well, it's not the worse thing. So you have a couple options. Sure, you can exchange some water to lower the CYA to any other lower number between 30-80 and maintain the proper SLAM FC level for that CYA as noted on the FC/CYA Levels. Or, you can just press-on with a CYA of 90 and your FC SLAM level would be 35. Since chlorine/bleach seem to be a tough to find, having a lower CYA may be the ideal option so you can maintain a lower FC level, but it's totality up to you. Don't beat yourself too badly for it. Have a nice weekend.

Are you using bleach or liquid pool shock? They are the same thing except the pool shock is a higher concentration. I only ask because when bleach got hard to find I could always find pool shock. People just don't thing of it as bleach. Assuming you can find shock, I'd try to tough it out for the next couple of months.

How is your calcium? You usually dont worry about calcium in a vinyl pool, so hopefully it is low. If it is, you could get by with using Cal-hypo for a while.

I am using 12.5% liquid shock from the pool store.

Hi!
My calcium is 50. Is that low? I'm sorry, I don't know about Cal-hypo. I will research it!

Thank you!
Yes, 50 is low, so you should have some wiggle room before you add too much calcium and have to worry about scaling. Liquid chlorine is the best, but Cal-Hypo shock would be a good short term alternative.
