1) When Jandy phone support, Inyo Pools, and an Aqualink PDA dipswitch setting indicated I could control a 2 speed motor with my current panel, I ordered a new 2 speed motor and pump relay switch (#6796) for my failing Stealth single speed. Before taking my system apart I started to try to review the nature of Aqualink programming and TFP notes on such (I know - a little late to be doing my homework:(). I ran across this:

"Oct 25, 2014
Question - Can I use a 2-speed pump with an older Jandy Aqualink?

Response - Automation systems do not really "communicate" with 2-speed pumps. A 2-speed pump runs by supplying power to either the low speed winding or the high speed winding. So many automation systems just need 2 relays one is turned on for high speed and the other is turned on for low speed.

If you do not have a spare relay, you could look at the newer smaller VS pumps, like the Superflo Vs or Max-flo VS or SuperPump VS. These have built in speed controllers but still require an external timer for on/off operation. When the pump is turned on it will run at a higher speed (you set) for an amount of time you set, and then switch to a lower speed (you set) until the timer turns it off. There is a 3rd speed you can select manually, like for vacuuming or the spa.

The "gotchas" with these pumps is that the speed can NOT be controlled by the automation system. So if it was running on low and you turn the spa on, the pump will stay on low and you will have to manually turn up the pump speed. OR if you have solar, it can not automatically increase the pump speed when solar is needed.

Does this mean there is no conditional programming - eg, "if the spa is turned on, the pump will be set to high" or "When cleaner turns off, filter pump returns to low speed"? Must everything be set by clock or else manually?

2) Also - Will my pump need to use 2 Jandy relays or will the motor relay switch (<Jandy Dual Speed Pump Relay Kit - 6796 - INYOPools.com>) serve that function?
Thanks,
David - Dallas

I have not seen conditional programs on the Aqualink. @PoolGate may know better.

i think with the 6796 you use two relays - the main filter/pump relay for high speed and one other AUX for the low speed.

I am not sure you can do what you want here but take a look at the OneTouch settings, which essentially are macros that activate multiple things. As long as you have a button that you can press on your Aqualink to activate high or low speed, you should be able to make a OneTouch that activates that button (along with any other function you need).

I suspect that kit mimics using 2 relays so it would probably do what you want. Ask Inyo.

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and installed 2speed pump and the 6796 pump motor relay, and it works pretty well. There is no if/then programming option, but the flow seems to be adequate on low for both salt production and providing for the cleaner booster pump. The heater may require high power at certain times but seemed to work for the spa. I need to play around with it because I saw a "general fault" error code on the pda once while running the heater. I haven't been able to find what that error code means yet. Since the heater use is episodic and unpredictable, I won't be able to use the timing function to program it which complicates things. I continue to ponder and explore options. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. I think my (~2005) board is too old for iAqualink and one touch. David - Dallas
