Chemical storage - outside garage? Check. Don't mix muriatic acid and chlorine? So now I need a 2nd storage location outside garage???

So after about 10 years I learned that hard way that you shouldn't store pool chemicals in a Central Texas garage. Lots of rust on things, especially on a mountain bike that was stored on the wall about 5' from my pool shelf. All spokes blown out, etc..... It could've been worse!

I bought a plastic deck box to store outside (no pool house or outdoor shed) but then read that you should never store muriatic acid (MA) together with chlorine pucks. Currently I still have the pucks (in individual plastic covers, in a larger sealed bin) in the garage, and all other chemicals outside in the plastic bin. But I'm worried about even chlorine in a sealed, non-ventilated, non-conditioned Texas garage.

But I thought about pulling the MA out of the bin and leaving it outside next to pool equipment but this would expose it to all the elements.

What's worse for rusting stuff? Chlorine or MA?

Any advice?

Thanks.

The chlorine is more sensitive to heat. I used to keep mine in the laundry room. MA can handle just about anything. Safety from kids and pets would be the next concern.

For what it's worth, I learned the hard way almost in the exact same way - mountain bikes too. :hammer:

Muriatic acid vapors are far more corrosive than liquid chlorine vapors. LC, even with vented caps, gives off very little fumes. MA on the other hand, even with sealed caps, give off LOTS of vapors.

MA should be stored outside, in a plastic deck box near the equipment pad and away from curious critters.

Thanks for the tips! Would it make a difference if my chlorine is all 3” pucks, in individually sealed plastic bags as opposed to bulk in a not-well-sealed 50# container? I never use liquid chlorine, which I agree would be more volatile.

Store the MA outside in a bin and the rest can be inside / garage without concern. The MA is what corroded the metal in the garage.
