I picked up the 16" Intex Krystal Clear sand and salt setup for $260 to do some overkill with a 14' x 42" (~3500 gallons). Well, I setup the 14' and frankly the size/volume of the pool in relation to proximity to house and fence line has me nervous enough to scale down to a 12' x 30" (1,700 gallons). I have not setup the 2140 GPH pump yet because I figured out the 14' was too large prior attaching the filter. I know this pump is oversized for the 14'. It is REALLY oversized for the 12'. Am I nuts for thinking of using it? Will it cause any issues with managing levels to oversize something this much? I figure I am keeping the 16" pump regardless to hook up the 14' (or something larger) next year when I have a bigger back yard. But I'm open to suggestions on a proper upgrade for the 12' pool. Thanks!

I don't think it will hurt anything, (might make your pool into a swim spa when it is on LOL) but it will be a lot of modifying for a pretty small pool. good practice, maybe?
It’s definitely overkill for your small pool, but it wouldn’t hurt anything to use it. However, I think you will run into a bit of an issue trying to use it if you have the all in one pump/filter/swg system. The problem is that with the all in one system there is no way to run the filter/pump and the SWG separately using the timer. Either they are both on or they are both off. And with such a small pool you will only need to run the SWG for a very short time which will probably not be enough time for the filter to run to effectively circulate the water and clean the pool. In fact, the timer has a minimum runtime of 1 hour, which is probably too much time for the SWG to run on that small pool and too little time for the filter.
If you don’t have the all in one system, then the pump/filter and SWG have separate timers and can be run independently, so this way it is will be possible to run the pump/filter for a few hours a day, but only run the SWG for a short time (although you might still struggle here a little as time minimum run time will still be an hour and it can only be adjusted in 1 hour increments)
Even if you don’t plan to use the new pump with this current pool, if you have the all in one system and you can still return it, I would recommend doing so. The limitation of having to run both the pump/filter and SWG on the timer is a big one and even with a bigger pool it can make things difficult to dial in and cause problems.

Practice is basically what I am doing here anyway. Plan is to move buy a bigger piece of property to build an in ground pool next year. Maybe setup an above ground for the first year to get a feel for setting the site for the in ground. I figure managing a smaller setup will teach me a great deal about chemistry/pumps etc.
This is the info I was looking for. I the suppose the CG-26679 is an all in one? I can return it pretty easy because it is Amazon. However, the manual suggests I can set timers for both the pump and SWG separately. So maybe you are referencing something else as all in one? I like the idea of the higher horsepower pump and have read some negative things about the lower horsepower pumps. Besides that, the cost between any sand filter pump and this combo unit is pretty negligible. That is if you can even find one for sale about now.
That is definitely an all in one system, but it is a newer model than one I’ve seen, so it’s possible that intex made a change. If that’s the case it would be a huge improvement. However, I did notice that in the amazon description for the product it says “Both systems are controlled automatically with one 24 hour timer”, so that would suggest to me that it’s only a single timer.
I used the combo on my 12 foot pool. I have the one that's 1500 gal/ ..it was great except for what Brett mentioned about the timer. I ran the swg for 3 hours ( so you'll probably only have to run your swg 1.5 hours) to keep FC at 5. To run the filter without the swg, you have to go to the pump and change it manually, and then turn the pump off and back on so the timer for to start the swg will come back on. I would look over the paperwork that came with it, and if it runs both on the same timer (the intex site says one 24 hour time for both) I'd consider returning it. On the other hand, if you only plan to use it a year or two, it may not be that big a deal for you. I'm on my 3rd year with mine and I'm used to it now.
