Good morning,

I am interested in remodeling my 35 y o gunite pool after numerous plumbing leaks and repairs. I would like to replumb the entire pool in hopes of solving the leak issues we have been experiencing.
When doing a replumb, is the main drain normally included?

That's entirely your call. Many, many new pools are being built without main drains nowadays. Has yours been causing your problems? You can just have it capped off and ignore it if you choose.

Do you have more than one skimmer?

Deb,

I would say yes, but I would ask the builder and not assume...

If I ever re-do my pool, one of the things I'm going to do is remove the main drains all together.. They really serve no useful purpose and it just eliminates something else that can go wrong...

I have two rent house pools that have non-operating main drains, and they work just a well as my pool which has operating main drains.

Because your pool is 35 years old, I would suspect that your main drain is plumbed into the bottom of your skimmer... If so, and you decide to re-do the main drain, I would make sure it is disconnected from the skimmer and run back to the equipment pad with a Jandy valve for control.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Maddie

Thank you for responding. I have a 24k gallon gunite and it has 2 skimmers and a hot tub w a main drain also. We would commit to replacing the entire deck of the pool if it could be completely replumbed. But to replace the deck to replumb as a preventative does not seem sensible if main drains are not included bc we would be hoping for another 30 y life on plumbing....albeit there could be problems earlier...
