Separate question from my last thread - how long should the 10g of DPD powder last in the TF100 kit? I searched the forum and see people saying it lasted them months or even a year. I’ve had this kit a week and I’m almost out of it, using it maybe 10-15 times so far with each using one heaping scoop.

What’s the best deal to get a bunch of the powder?

This has over 100 grams (10 times the size of the one included in the TF-100) for $33...

Another 10 gram bottle will cost you $12 - Amazon.com : Taylor Technologies R-0870-I DPD Powder for Swimming Pool, 10gm : Swimming Pool Liquid Test Kits : Gateway

Making the 100 gram bottle clearly the winner here...

Given that this stuff goes bad after a couple seasons I fail to see how throwing out 80-90% of it makes it a "clear winner"

Rodex, I don't know how heaping you are making it, but you should get 50+ tests out of what comes with the TF-100. Something's not adding up.

Is there a particular reason you’re testing 10-15 times a week?

Newbie pool owner, did a few tests just to make sure I did it correctly, then more for the OCLT a couple times, and a few more for trying to bump up the FC to 8ppm, of which the color-matching test didn’t seem to be capable of.

It’s a small scoop, one can only make it so heaping, right? Any chance I got shorted on the quantity?

Are you using the small end of the scoop? We've seen people use the paddle end and that's way more powder than you need. Even using the small dipper end of the scoop you only need it full to have the amount of powder for the 10ml sample. We err on the side of caution and say to round it off. Even rounded off that's not much powder per test and 10 grams should last you a good long time. The website says that it should last approximately 100 tests. I get a little less than that because I'm a little overly generous on the amount but I can go a whole year on a jar.

Here's a picture of the scoop. The tiny dipper end (to the left) should be just a tiny bit rounded off full of powder.

Add me as well... I _think_ the instructions referred to the "paddle" (I'll have to check), which I thought was odd, because, how high are you supposed to heap it? And if you're using the 10ml instead of 25ml sample, do you use less?

Maybe this should be put in a FAQ somewhere (if it isn't already)

Thanks for your enlightenment! :D

Yeah that was my confusion as well. I took it far too literally ?

It only needs to turn pink. 1 scoop does it if there's enough chlorine. Two scoops are often needed if FC is very low however. I never am at less than 3ppm, so I don't know (remember?) about where exactly you need two scoops but I know that at 3ppm only one scoop is needed and it can even be a level scoop.

Ah, that makes sense. It does turn pink after the first dip, but I always put in another because I assumed it would not correlate. Thanks

As long as I can see a tiny bit of powder left in the 10ml sample I know I have enough. Saves on trying to define heaping.
True, but you don’t need a saturated solution, in which further powder will not dissolve. If you had a SpeedStir, that tiny bit of powder would also dissolve.
