Hazy water after heavy rains

We are getting heavy rains off of Barry right now. My water is what I would describe as a little hazy today. Anyone dealt with this after lots of rain? No debris in pool but some grit in corners from the wind blowing it off the concrete.

FC 4 (this is before my daily add)

Heavy rains typically do not have a huge impact on pool chemistry. We recently got about 9" of rain in a night here in Nebraska. I had a similar situation where the water looked slightly hazy. I ran my dolphin the next day and brought by FC up to SLAM just in case and went off to work. By the time I was home from work my water looked perfect again. Ran a full set of tests to be sure everything was fine and it was. If I recall correctly my total FC loss was 2PPM from 6AM to 6PM in full sun all day.

So, I told you all that to tell you this. If your chemistry was reasonably balanced before the storm, my assumption is that the haze you see is probably suspended dirt/dust and should filter out reasonably well. But, you could raise your FC to SLAM and keep an eye on it for a day or two.

As long as your FC has not dropped below minimum (and doesn't look like it has) then the most likely possibility would be the pH rise brought on by aeration could be causing some temporary cloudiness. Dose your acid and see how it looks in the morning.

UPDATE 7/17:

Yesterday morning pool had cleared up mostly. Then, more heavy, heavy rains. I was hazy again this morning and little worse after I turned pump on.

I put in 17 ozs of muriatic acid. Now, I am at probably 7.8. TA was at 50. I went ahead and put in about 6 more ozs. of acid. I'm hoping it doesn't drop my TA too low. Was this smart?

That's fine. Get the pH down to where you want it in the mid-7s and then re-test TA. If it's below 50 get it back to 50 with baking soda. Baking soda doesn't raise the pH as much but adds a lot of TA.

How do you add chlorine to your pool, liquid, powder, pucks, SWG?

You still need to add chlorine daily and test daily to make sure your FC doesn't drop below the minimum for your CYA. See the link in my signature.

If it is still hazy, I suggest that you do an OCLT to see if you have something growing in your water: Perform the Overnight FC Loss Test (OCLT) - Trouble Free Pool

Yes, I do daily FC and pH testing. I use liquid bleach.

FC last night at 8pm was 5. This AM it was 4 at 7:30 so I am good on OCLT , too. I just don't know what the cloudiness is! It has to be something will all of the rain... It wasn't like that until we started getting 2 inches of rain every day.

CYA 30-40 so I'm saying 40 (yesterday)
FC 4

lindz18-Thanks for posting. I am following close.
Barry must have brought in something in it's rain water. I am in S Louisiana and experiencing the same issue. My FC has been at or near 5 for months, and still is. CA stays around 70. My CH is low (80) but I am not sure that has an effect. I don't have big pool parties and see no reason for the haze. My pump normally runs 4 hrs a day. I think I'll keep it on for a day to see what happens.

Ok, y'all. I'm getting aggravated. I put a gallon in my pool this AM. FC was 4. I just checked it again and it is already back down to 4. I can't keep on putting 2 gallons a day in this puppy. My CYA is a little low. It was showing in between 30 and 40 so I called it 40. Do I need to raise my CYA a little? CC is still zero. Passing OCLT. It has been horridly hot. Heat indexes in the 100s. I just like running lower on CYA because it is easier to slam. Plus, I inherited the pool with a CYA of over 200. That was a fun ordeal to get solved.

If I do put more stabilizer in, can I use some trichlor pucks for a few days? Kill 2 birds with one stone? I have some on hand that we use when we go on vacation. Then, just go back to bleach of course. How many days after the pucks are fully dissolved would you say the CYA level would be showing accurately?

I have never had ANY problems with FC or water clarity in my 5 seasons of a TFP pool until last week when all this rain from Barry came along.

,

You gotta watch those 3" pucks... they will do exactly what they are supposed to do. Every 1ppm of chlorine, you're adding .90 ppm of CYA. I have a smaller pool, but I successfully navigated 10ppm CYA and a whole 1ppm pH in two days. Pump on only 5hr/day. Went from ~18ppm CYA to 28-30ppm, and didn't have to add bleach amounting to about 10ppm over those two days as I hovered at 5.5ppm FC.

Vacation days? Not really since I was testing and worrying the whole time!

I did however do what I intended. Raise cya from 18ppm to 30ppm, and get pH down from 8.2 (pH went down to 7.0, so I overshot that with the pucklazy I was enjoying).

Use the pucks, but know what will happen, and be on alert. Pull all pucks when you reach your target levels. Save them for a rainy day and sell the rest of the bucket to people you don't like.

The simple, easy answer to about 90% of "hazy" issues is to elevate your chlorine and observe.

No need to SLAM (not yet, anyway) but simply double your normal FC and hold it there about 48 hours and watch the result.
Water looks better. No haze at all once sun goes down. It is only hazy anyways at the deep end. I can tell when I look at the main drain. But my FC is being burnt up at a ridiculous rate. I got it up to about 10 ppm today and it is already down to 3.5. This is getting very expensive. My CYA is in between 30 and 40. I guess it is time to raise it, right?

A 7.5 FC loss is excessive even with a CYA of 30-40. Only two things consume chlorine.........UV from the sun and organics in your pool.

A typical pool with your CYA will lose 2-4 ppm daily to UV.

So, if you are passing the OCLT, the only conclusion is then a testing error or math error.....it is NOT the rain unless you are getting run-off water into your pool.

Today I used a different brand of bleach. This is the first day I noticed such a large usuage. Our local Fred's is going out of business and I bought a bunch of their
64 oz jugs at a discount. Maybe they aren't fresh....Hmm.
